원불교는 미국인 지지 필요
미국 교도 참여 이끌어내야

A similar economic situation in Korea is making it difficult for the Won Buddhist order to continue receiving the same level of donations it has depended on in the past.
The mutual help and support of the kyomunims and a growing number of American lay members can create a new movement and culture of hope and promise in the U.S. For American lay members to feel that they are an essential part of the temple where they attend services, their volunteer work and financial contributions are essential. By addressing these needs, the order can further its mission goals and support its work through helping Americans to become disciplined participants in both.
American religious tradition has always included regular contributions, even tithing (giving one tenth of the household income to the church). People expect to be asked. However, the kyomunims sometimes feel that asking for money and services may conflict with their mission to provide edification. They do ask, but some American members don't hear them, and don't even realize that their help is needed. Buddhism and Won Buddhism are new to them, and they don't have detailed information about how the order supports itself. Sometimes people even ask, "How does the temple pay for its heat and lights, and maintain the property? Do they have enough money from Korea?" They may conclude that since the order owns all the temples and employs all the ministers, it has enough money to run the temples and pay the ministers.
People would like to have a strong sense of belonging to the community where they practice. This has been the most important factor mentioned by those I have met to explain why they love the Won Buddhist temples. They strongly admire the kyomunims, and they love the sense of being embraced by a Sangha, a community of loving people with beliefs and morality like their own. They also love the message of Master Sotaesan's teachings, and they would like to feel that they can be a part of the edification of others. But many people are shy and do not put themselves forward readily. The order could organize information and invitations asking people to support the temples and the Won Institute, and the Won Dharma Center, and United Religions. I believe that in time, there would be a great response and a growing awareness among Americans of the opportunity of a lifetime they have in meeting Won Buddhism.
오늘날 미국인들에게 원불교의 메시지와 가르침은 대단히 필요하고 동시에 원불교는 미국인들의 지지가 필요하다.
미국과 유럽의 경제상황은 많은 사람들이 경제적 파탄을 맞게 되고 겸허하게 도움을 구하는 기도를 하는 등 어려운 상황에 처하게 되었다.
한국에서도 마찬가지로 어려운 경제상황 때문에 원불교 교단도 미국에 원불교 기관설립을 시작할 때와 같은 수준으로 지속적인 경제적 지원을 해야 하는 어려움을 갖게 한다.
교무와 증가하는 미국인 재가 교도들의 상호 협력과 지원은 미국에서 희망과 약속이라는 새로운 움직임과 문화를 창조할 수 있다.
왜냐하면 미국인 재가 교도들이 스스로 자신들이 참여하는 교당에서 중요한 부분을 차지하며 자신들의 자원활동과 경제적 기여가 중요하다고 느끼도록 하기 때문이다.
바로 이런 필요성을 역설함으로써 교단은 미국인들이 원불교의 교화목적과 교화활동을 지원하는 훈련된 참여자들이 되도록 도와 주면서 교화목적과 활동들을 진척 시킬 수 있다.
미국의 종교 전통은 언제나 정기적인 헌금 혹은 교회에 자기 수입의 10%를 내는 십일조 조차도 예상하고 있다.
미국 교도들은 교무들로부터 그런 요청을 듣고자 한다. 그러나 교무들은 돈이나 봉사를 요청하는 것이 교화활동에 갈등을 가져올 수 있다고 생각하기도 한다.
교무들이 그렇게 생각하는 동안 미국인들은 그러한 교무들의 필요성을 듣지 못하거나 자신들의 도움이 필요하다고 깨닫지 조차도 못한다.
불교나 원불교는 미국인들에게 새로운 종교이며 교단이 어떻게 스스로 유지되는지에 관해서 상세한 정보를 미국인들은 모른다. 때로는 미국인들이 "어떻게 교당에서 연료비와 전기세를 내며 교당을 유지하는가?"에 대해 묻기도 한다.
미국인 교도들은 원불교 교단이 모든 교당들을 소유하고 있고 교무들을 고용하고 있기 때문에 교단이 교당을 운영하고 교무들에게 월급을 줄만큼 충분한 돈이 있을 거라고 결론 내릴지도 모른다.
미국인 교도들은 자신들이 수행하는 공동체에 강한 소속감을 갖고자 한다. 이것은 내가 만난 미국인들이 왜 원불교 교당을 사랑하는가를 설명하는 가장 중요한 요소이다. 그들은 교무님들을 매우 사랑한다.
그리고 자신들도 수행공동체 즉 자신들의 것처럼 믿음과 도덕성으로 사랑하는 사람들의 공동체 속에서 환영받고 있다고 느끼고 싶어 한다.
미국인 교도들 또한 소태산대종사의 가르침이 갖고 있는 메시지를 사랑하고, 그리고 자신들이 교화활동에 역할을 한다고 느끼고 싶어한다. 그러나 많은 미국인들은 수줍고 그래서 자신들이 적극적으로 나서지 못한다.
교단은 교당들과 미주선학대학원, 그리고 원 다르마 센터와 UR운동에 사람들이 지원할 수 있도록 알려주는 정보를 잘 만들고 그런 활동에 미국인들이 참여하도록 권장할 수 있어야 한다.
언젠가는 이생에 원불교를 만나게 된 기회를 갖게 된 미국인들 가운데 큰 응답과 자각이 심화되는 날이 올 것이라고 나는 믿는다.
