동성애자 문제
인간 존중·조화 길 찾아야
This cultural and legal transition regarding fair treatment for gays and lesbians has been a long and difficult process, spurred by the efforts of activists and civil rights groups, as well as published research findings that there is often a genetic basis for homosexuality. Many gay and lesbian people have always insisted that they were aware of their sexual orientation while still very young, and were never in a position to make a choice about it. Therefore, they say that it cannot be called a "condition" or a "problem" or considered in any way unnatural. To them, it is completely natural and the basis for joyous and loving relationships that can last a lifetime.
Many Americans regard the actions of the Catholic church and other religious groups who deny full participation to gays and lesbians as harmful and abusive as well as discriminatory. Of course, all religious groups must decide whether to ordain gays and lesbians, and they have the right to do that according to their beliefs. However, it is important to realize that some Catholic gay men and lesbian women feel that entering the priesthood or a convent and remaining celibate is a powerful and healing solution for any spiritual conflict they may feel regarding their sexual orientation. Each religious group has to deeply and prayerfully consider its mission to gay and lesbian people in making decisions concerning their status.
At this time of opportunity for Won Buddhism in America, when the need for the teachings of Master Sot'aesan is so great, this is one of the important issues that must be openly discussed. Americans seeking a new spiritual home are usually very sensitive to indications of unfairness or inequality in any group they are getting to know about. As we all look ahead to the great Centennial Celebration, I pray that the Order will be able to find a middle way that will honor all human beings and create harmony among all its members, at home and abroad.
서구 세계의 대다수의 나라들과 마찬가지로 미국의 문화와 법은 게이와 레즈비안 라이프 스타일을 서서히 수용하는 방향으로 변해 왔다. 극정적 사회상을 유지하고자 하는 공적인 사회조직들은 차별하지 않는 평등의 철학과 정책을 분명히 해야 한다. 회사들이나 교육기관들 그리고 군인 조직도 게이나 레즈비안 직원이나 학생에게 다른 사람과 동등한 권리와 기회를 부여해야 한다. 연방정부로부터 지원을 받는 사람들이나 기관들은 누구도 차별을 하지 않는 정책을 공표하도록 하고 있다. 만약 이 의무를 이행하지 않거나 또는 불차별의 정책을 준수하지 못할 경우는 그 기관은 연방정부의 지원을 받지 못할 뿐 아니라 차별에 대해서 소송을 당하는 위험에 처할 것이다. 그렇게 공표된 정책은 또한 기관 평가단들이 기관을 재 신임을 위해서 방문할 때 마다 재 확인된다.
게이와 레즈비안을 평등하게 대하게 된 이 문화적 법률적 변화는 길고 어려운 과정을 통해 이루어졌고 수많은 활동가들의 노력과 인권운동을 하는 단체들의 노력 그리고 동성애자에 대한 유전적 근거를 발견한 보고서들이 발표되면서 탄력을 받게 됐다. 수많은 게이와 레즈비안들은 자신들이 어린 시절부터 성적 경향성을 자각했다고 한결같이 주장하면서 결코 그들의 성적 경향성이 자신들의 선택 여하에 달린 것이 아니라고 강조한다.
그러므로, 그들은 어떤 식으로 든지 자신들을 부자연스럽다고 생각하거나 '문제' 혹은 '조건'적이라고 말해서는 안된다고 주장한다. 그들의 사랑은 전적으로 자연법칙에 어긋나는 것이 아니고 일생을 살아갈 수 있는 즐겁고 사랑스러운 관계의 토대라고 한다.
다수의 미국인들은 가톨릭과 다른 종교들이 게이와 레즈비안들에게 온전한 참여를 허용하지 않는 행위들은 올바르지 못하고 경멸과 차별이라고 생각한다. 물론 모든 종교가 게이와 레즈비안을 성직자로 받아들일 것인지 말 것인지를 결정해야 하며, 그리고 각 종교의 신념에 따라서 결정할 권리가 있다. 그러나, 어떤 가톨릭 게이나 레즈비안들은 수도원이나 수녀원에 들어가서 독신 생활을 하는 것이 자신들의 성적 경향성을 고려할 때 느끼는 영적 갈등을 치유하는데 효과적이고 치유적이라는 것을 깨닫는 것은 중요할 수 있다. 각 종교 단체들은 게이나 레즈비안들에 대한 각 종교들이 어떤 사명을 갖고 있는지 생각하면서 게이와 레즈비안들이 그 종교 내에서 위상을 가져야 하는지 결정해야 할 것이다.
미국 원불교의 발전을 위한 이 시점에서 소태산대종사의 가르침이 중차대하게 요구된다고 생각한다면 게이와 레즈비안 문제는 터놓고 공개적으로 논의돼야 할 매우 중요한 이슈에 속한다. 새로운 영적 고향을 추구하는 미국인들은 대체로 그들이 점점 알아가는 어떤 단체들에서 경험하는 불평등과 차별의 징후들에 대해서는 매우 민감하다. 우리 모두 백주년을 앞두고 있는 시점에서 나는 원불교 교단이 모든 인간존재들을 존중하고 모든 구성원들의 조화를 한국에서도 해외에서도 이룰 수 있는 적법한 길을 찾기를 기도한다.
