Here at Won Nam Hall, we had no problems from Hurricane Sandy. During the storm, I went to the window and watched the treetops doing their wild dance, knowing that it was helping the trees to strengthen their branches. The students at the Won Institute are like the trees in a way. They receive much stress and hard work and exercise for their minds and spirits. In my Critical Thinking class for WBS students, we test one another to see if our reasoning is valid. Many times in the course of our discussions, Won Buddhist teachings are mentioned. I always enjoy these times because they give us an opportunity to give our faith some exercise.

In many class discussions with our bright students, we have come to a fuller realization of how deeply compatible critical thinking is with Won Buddhism's "sound thought". These two ways of study greatly reinforce one another. When we root out the fallacies in people's arguments about controversial issues, we get to a better understanding of the issues and gain an appreciation and respect for the opinions of others who disagree with us.

More than this, we find again and again that the only way to resolve contradictions and misunderstandings is to return to the simple, clear methods of Master Sot'aesan. This is not to say that we dutifully affirm the teachings in order to be obedient disciples. Not at all. Truly, to be fully rational, we must understand and internalize the deeper meanings of the Scriptures, so that we can put them to use in difficult situations. They are practical and intelligent. They do not demand irrational faith. They provide insight, a reliable practice, and lead to confidence and a broad-minded attitude toward others. These are the very marks of self-ability and wisdom that I hope to instill through the skills of critical thinking, so that we may be strengthened by any storms that come to us.
