미국인 4명 원불교학과 수학
원불교에 대한 관심 높아가
미주선학대학원 원불교학과 교수
We have four American students in the program, one of whom - Daesun Turner - is a pre-minister. Chad Crisp and I, both WBS faculty members, have enrolled in the program as students as well. Chad has only recently discovered Won Buddhism and is deeply impressed with its teachings and interested to learn more. He is dedicated to the students and has formed great friendships with them, and he is eager to be a part of our service and support of their education. I myself, after many years as a Won Buddhist and five years teaching Critical Thinking at the Institute, have enrolled in the program in order to receive the credentials that will allow me to teach our Preparatory Won Buddhism courses for temple members and for students whose undergraduate degrees were not in Buddhism. The fourth American student, Maureen Mergen, is an accountant who has formed a deeply meaningful relationship with the kyomus at the Philadelphia temple. Her spirituality, passion and creative imagination are inspired by the WBS classes.
I think that we four Americans are representative of a need and an interest that exists in every U.S. city where the Won Buddhist temple has an American congregation. The Institute has received inquiries about the WBS program not only from members of the Won Buddhist temples, but even from Buddhists and non-Buddhists who are seeking to deepen their spiritual journeys. When the Buddhist chaplaincy Masters of Divinity program starts in the fall of 2015, we will see a new opening of opportunities for Americans to meet Won Buddhism and to carry it to the world through their work as chaplains.
I am happy to be part of this important development, and I know I speak for my fellow students when I say that we look forward to being part of the future movement for Won Buddhism in the U.S. I look forward to a future event when the Won Dharma Center again invites all of the American Won Buddhists to join together from across the country for a retreat and sharing our practice. The retreat for Americans that was held just before the Grand Opening of the Won Dharma Center was a wonderful surprise to the 60 or so participants, who hadn't realized there were so many of us, or that our feelings for Won Buddhism were so similar. The face of Buddhism is changing a great deal in America these days, in most of the traditions that have come here from Asian countries, and it is interesting to see how well the reforms of Master Sot'aesan anticipated the reforms of modern Buddhism that are happening here and now. The mastery of material civilization is an important theme among all thoughtful people in the world today, and the way to achieve that mastery is clearly offered in the Won Buddhist Canon.
지난해 8월 미주선학대학원 졸업식에서 Ruthann Fitzpatrick 이 원불교학과 석사학위를 수여 받았다. 예비교무가 아닌 일반인으로써 원불교학 석사학위를 받은 첫 미국인이다. 이 일의 중요성은 소태산대종사의 사상을 깊이 이해하고자 하는 사람들이 서서히 나타나는 것을 의미하며 원불교 교육의 새로운 기회를 암시하는 일이기도 하다. 이번 학기에는 미주선학대학원 설립 이후 처음으로 원불교학과에 한국인 학생보다 미국인 학생수가 많다.
우리는 원불교학과에 4명의 미국인 학생이 수학하고 있는데, 그들 가운데 한 명이 바로 예비교무인 원대선이다. Chad Crisp와 나는 원불교학과 교수이면서 동시에 원불교학과에 학생으로써 공부하고 있다. Chad는 원불교를 최근에 알아 보게 되었고 원불교의 가르침에 깊이 감명받고 더 깊이 공부하고자 한다.
그는 학생으로써 전념하고 있고 다른 학생들과 깊은 우정을 형성하고 있다. 동시에 그는 다른 학생들의 교육에 도움을 주고 교수회의 등 관련된 일에도 참여하고 있다.
나 자신은 수년간 원불교교도이며 그리고 미주선학대학원에 와서 5년간 '비판적 사고'라는 수업을 가르친 이후에 교당에 나오는 미국인 교도들이나 학부과정에서 불교학 혹은 원불교학을 공부하지 않은 일반 학생들을 위해서 원불교 예비과정을 가르칠 수 있는 자격을 갖기 위해서 원불교학과 석사과정에 들어왔다. 네 번째 미국인 학생인 Maureen Mergen은 필라델피아교당 교무들과 친밀한 관계를 맺고 있는 회계사이다. Maureen의 영성과 열정과 창의적인 상상력은 원불교학과 수업에서 발휘된다.
네 명의 우리 미국인들은 아메리칸 교도들이 있는 원불교 교당이 있는 미국의 여러 도시에서 발생하게 될 필요한 것들과 관심을 이해하는 데 대표적인 사례가 될 것이라고 생각한다.
미주선학대학원은 미국인 원불교교도들로부터 만이 아니라 또한 자신의 영성수행을 깊이 하고자 하는 불교인들이나 비불교인들로 부터도 원불교학과 프로그램에 관한 질문을 자주 받아 왔다.
불교 채플란직을 위한 석사과정이 2015년 가을부터 시작하는데, 우리는 미국인들이 원불교를 만나게 되고 원불교의 가르침을 채플란직을 통하여 세상에 전파하게 되는 새로운 기회를 열 것으로 기대한다.
나는 이 중요한 발전에 참여하게 된 것을 행복하게 생각한다. 그리고 나는 이것이 미국에서 원불교의 미래방향의 분야가 될 것이라는 기대를 하고 있다고 동료학생들에게 말할 것이다. 원다르마센터에서 다시 한번 미국인 원불교 교도들을 모두 초청해서 정기훈련을 하고 수행경험을 나눌 수 있도록 한다면 미국인 교화의 미래에 대한 기대도 할 수 있을 것이다. 원다르마센터 봉불식 바로 전에 실시 되어진 미국인을 위한 정기훈련은 60여 명의 참여자들에게 환상적이고 경이로운 일이었다. 모두가 그렇게 많은 사람들이 모여들지 몰랐었고 원불교에 대한 우리의 느낌들은 모두 비슷했기 때문이다. 원불교의 얼굴은 오늘날 미국에서 크게 변화하고 있는데, 대부분의 전통은 아시아 나라들로부터 미국에 전해진 것이었다.
그리고 소태산대종사의 혁신사상이 지금 미국에서 일어나는 혁신된 현대불교를 얼마나 잘 예견한 것인지 보는 것이 흥미롭다. 물질개벽을 잘 이해 하는 일이 현대 세계에서 생각이 깊은 모든 사람들의 주요 관심사이며, 물질문명을 선용하는 방법이 원불교 정전에 분명하게 제시되어 있다.
