On the English version of the Principal Book
The members of the Translation Committee flew to the U.S. to meet with a group of American lay members who had reviewed the suggestions of many people across the U.S. and made recommendations for how to make the Principal Book more understandable to Americans. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Translation Committee members for their time and attention, and especially to Rev. Jungdo Ryu, whose sincere dedication and open-mindedness made this event possible.
This workshop was a historic and significant event for two reasons first, it is a clear indication that the Won Buddhist mission to the world, and especially to America, is taking root. The clear call for a translation that speaks to the hearts of Americans is the surest indication that this message is needed and welcome here.
The second reason is that this workshop marks the first time that the order has sent Korean decision mak-ers to sit down to sincerely listen and discuss with American lay members. This event should be the first of many such interactions that will begin to enliven the American Won Buddhist community, as well as to enrich the experience of the Won Buddhist Order in Korea.
After reading and thinking about the suggestions made by temple members around the U.S., we on the committee spent many hours, first working individually, and then together, in long and detailed discussions of what to recommend. As we did this work, uppermost in our minds was the work of the ministers who lead the American congregations, and our own experience as lay teachers of the dharma. Through that work, we have seen what confusion can result from a translation that, while strictly correct, is strange or uses words in ways that are not idiomatic, or are used out of their normal context. So our concern was not just the basic one of making sure that the translation was not mistaken. Our larger concern was the living experience of people meeting Won Buddhism for the first time, and the mistaken ideas they could receive from a confusing or strange-sounding translation.
We were deeply disappointed at the number of suggestions that the Translation Committee rejected because they need a literal translation for other translators to work from. I would like to suggest that the current translation with its careful, literal and faithful translation, remain the 'mother' text and be given to translators around the world. Then, the work that we have undertaken together can become the North American authorized version of the Principal Book that will make a truly powerful contribution to Won Buddhism's mission in America.
이번 달에 원불교 국제부의 주관으로 〈영문교전〉에 대해 제기되어 온 여러 문제들을 논의하고 개정을 위해서 교전영역에 관한 워크숍이 미주선학대학원에서 있었다.
정역위원들이 미국으로 와서 미국의 각 교당에서 많은 사람들이 제안한 의견들을 점검하고 미국인들이 보다 잘 읽고 이해 할 수 있는 교전을 만들기 위한 제안을 구상하고 있는 미국 재가 그룹들과 만났다. 우리는 정역위원들이 시간과 관심을 보여준 것에 감사하고 특히 이번 일을 가능하게 주선해준 류정도 교무의 정성과 열린 마음에 감사 드린다.
이번 워크숍은 두 가지 면에서 역사적이고 중요한 일이었다고 본다. 첫째는 세계를 향한 그리고 특히 미국을 향한 원불교 미션이 뿌리내리는 분명한 징후라는 점이다. 미국인들의 마음에 닿을 수 있는 번역에 대한 분명한 요구는 원불교의 메시지가 미국에서 필요하고 환영 받는다는 확실한 징후이다.
두 번째 이유는 이 워크숍이 교단에서 정책입안자들을 보내서 미국인 재가 교도들과 마주 앉아 진지하게 듣고 토론하는 첫 시도였다는 것이다. 이 행사는 미국인 원불교 공동체에 활력을 불어 넣을 뿐만 아니라 한국의 원불교 교단에도 중요한 체험이 시작되는 미래에 많은 상호영향의 첫 걸음이라는 점이다.
미국의 각 교당에 다니는 교도들이 제기한 제안들을 잘 읽고 생각한 후에 우리 대표자들이 함께 앉아 수시간을 함께 보냈다. 즉 처음에는 개별적으로 그리고 다음에는 함께 작업을 해서 무엇을 제안하고 요청할 것인가를 오래 상세하게 논의를 했던 것이다. 우리가 이 일을 하면서 우리들 마음에 중요하게 자리매김한 것은 미국교도들을 이끄는 교역자들의 활동과 재가 교역자로서의 우리 자신의 체험이었다. 그 일을 통하여 엄격하게 수정을 하면서 어색하거나 관용구적이지 않은 방식으로 단어들이 쓰였거나 또는 보편적인 맥락에 따라 사용된 번역에서 어떤 혼란이 일어날 수 있는지를 보게 됐다. 그렇게 우리의 관심은 번역이 잘못되지 않았는지를 확인하는 단순한 작업에 그치지 않았다. 우리들의 보다 큰 관심사는 처음 원불교를 만나는 사람들의 생생한 체험이었으며, 원불교를 처음 만난 사람들이 혼돈할 수 있거나 이상스럽게 들을 수 있는 번역을 접할 수 있는 잘못된 개념들에 대한 것이었다.
다른 번역자들이 한 것과 달리 정역위원들이 한 번역은 직역을 원칙으로 하기 때문에 우리가 낸 여러 제안들을 받아들이지 않은 것을 우리는 대단히 실망스럽게 생각할 수 밖에 없다. 따라서 필자가 제안하고 싶은 것은 현재 번역의 주의깊고 성실하게 직역을 원칙으로 한 현재 영역본을 '모본(母本)'으로 두고 전 세계의 여러 번역가들에게 맡기는 것이다. 그런다면, 우리가 함께 해 온 노력은 아메리카 원불교 미션에 진정으로 밑거름이 되어 북미(北美)에서 인정받는 〈영어교전〉이 되는데 일조가 될 것이다.
