멜리사를 처음 만난 것은 겨울 훈련 때였다. 당시 그녀는 호주에서 몇 년간 요리사 교육을 받고 일한 후 한국으로 막 돌아온 상태였다. 멜리사는 일자리를 구하기 위해 백방으로 고군분투하고 있었고, 훈련을 통해 좋은 기운을 받고 싶어했다.

수개월 후 우리가 다시 만났을 때, 상황은 근본적으로 완전히 달라져 있었다.

그녀는 서울의 번화가에서 자신이 직접 경영하는 식당을 열어 운영하고 있었고, 심지어 단체급식(케이터링) 서비스까지 제공하고 있었다. 임대주와의 갈등에 대해 설명하기 시작했지만 그녀의 목소리는 흥분으로 가득 차 있었다.

이 점이 나의 이목을 끌었다. '분명 힘든 상황에 대해 이야기하고 있는데 왜 기쁘게 들리는 거지?' 엄청난 고통에 대해 이야기하는 사람들의 목소리에는 보통 화나 불안, 좌절감이 묻어있기 마련이다.

나는 멜리사가 이러한 장애물들을 자신의 꿈을 실현하기 위한 여정의 일부로 받아들였음을 알게 됐다. 게다가 그녀의 목적의식과 열정은 모든 어려움을 무색하게 했다.

그녀가 이야기하는 동안 눈은 반짝 빛났고, 목소리에서는 열정과 열의가 느껴졌다. "신·분·의·성이 있는 사람의 눈은 밝게 빛난다"는 스승의 말이 생각났다.

그날 나는 멜리사의 눈에서 밝은 빛을 볼 수 있었다. 그녀는 스스로에 대한 신(信)이 있었고, 자신의 요리를 통해 세상에 행복을 가져다 주려는 분이 있었고, 더 경험이 많은 사람들에게 질문하는 것에 대한 두려움이 없었으며, 자신에게 의미 있는 정신적 수행과 사업에 균형을 맞추는 것에 전념하고 있었다.

그녀는 '신·분·의·성'이라는 네가지 진행 사조를 삶 속에 발전시켜나가는 멋진 요리사였다.

Belief, Zeal, Questioning, and Dedication.

I met Melissa at a winter retreat. At the time, she had just returned to Korea after spending many years in Australia training and working as a chef. She was struggling to find a job and she hoped that the retreat would help lift her spirits.

A few months later we met again but this time her situation had radically changed.
She opened her own restaurant in a busy part of Seoul and even provided catering services. She started to explain some of the problems she was having with her landlord, but her voice was full of excitement.

This caught my attention. Why did she sound happy talking about a difficult situation? People usually have anger or frustration in their voice when they relay a story of great affliction. I realized she fully accepted these obstacles as part of the journey to manifesting her dream. Moreover, her sense of purpose and fervor overshadowed all hardship.

As she spoke her eyes twinkled and you could feel the enthusiasm and passion in her voice. It reminded me of a saying my teacher once told me: The eyes of a person who has faith, zeal, questioning, and dedication shine brightly.

That day, I could see the bright light in Melissa's eyes. She had faith in herself, she possessed the zeal to bring happiness to the world through her cooking, she wasn't afraid to ask questions to people with more experience, and she was dedicated to balancing her business life with a meaningful spiritual practice.

She is an awesome chef who is developing the four articles of belief, zeal, questioning, anddedication.
