매주 월요일 저녁, 영산선학대학교에서는 대각전에서 천일기도를 올린다. 매 기도식마다 마지막에 성가 '원하옵니다'를 부르는데, 피아노 반주가 없기 때문에 흔히 몇몇 사람들이 다른 사람들과는 다른 음정으로 부르는 것을 들을 수 있다. 바른 음으로 부르는 사람들에게는 살짝 틀린 음정으로 부르는 사람들이 방해가 되어 종종 신경이 거슬리고 집중이 되지 않을 수 있다.

"누가 틀린 음정으로 부르고 있지?", "자기 소리가 다른 사람의 소리와 완전히 다르다는 걸 모르는 건가?", "우리가 성가를 함께 부를 수는 있는 거야?" 이는 '바른 음정'으로 부르는 사람들이 스스로에게 던지는 질문이다. 나도 혼자 이런 질문을 하며 눈을 떠 내 주위를 둘러봤던 적이 있었다. 모두 손을 모으고 눈은 감은 채, 음정이 맞지 않는 사람들도 진실함과 열정을 담아 성가를 부르고 있었다.

이것이 우리 공동체에 좋은 비유가 될 수 있다는 데 생각이 미쳤다. 모두 같은 영적인 길을 걷고 있지만, 목소리는 서로 다를 때도 있을 것이다. 나의 의견이 다른 이의 그것과 다를 수 있고, 작은 집단의 사람들이 더 큰 집단과 상충되는 시각을 내놓을 수도 있다. 그러나 명심할 것은 우리의 목소리가 때로는 서로 맞지 않을지라도 우리는 진실과 열정으로 함께 걷고 있다는 점이다.

결국 우리는, 더 과학적으로 문명화되고 있는 이 시대에 대종사의 비전을 드러내길 바라는 법동지이기에, 서로 합쳐야 한다. 다른 사람들에게 손가락질하기 전에 자신을 먼저 돌아보고, 타인의 의견을 판단하기 전, 먼저 그들의 입장이 돼야 한다.

어느 기도식이 끝나고, 음악 담당 교사가 나를 가리키며 이렇게 말했다. "교무님이 오늘 음정이 틀렸다고 생각했던 사람들 중 일부는 사실 성가를 바르게 부르고 있었어요. 나머지 분들의 음정이 틀린 거죠."

Every Monday evening, our school holds a 1000 day prayer service in the main dharma hall. At the end of each service we sing the hymn "In Prayer" without any piano accompaniment, so it's common to hear several or a small group of people sing in a different key from others. For those singing on-key, it can sometimes be irritating to sing the hymn while being distracted by the few who are slightly off-key. "Who's singing off-key?" "Don't they realize they sound totally different from the others?" "Are we ever going to sing this hymn in unison?" These are just some of the questions the people in the "on-key" group may ask themselves. I remember thinking one of these questions myself and opened my eyes to look around me. Everyone had their palms together, eyes closed, and sang with sincerity and passion- even the ones off-key. Then it dawned on me: perhaps this is a good metaphor for our Won-Buddhist spiritual community. We all walk on the same spiritual path, but there will be times when our voices differ. My opinion and thoughts may differ from the person next to me, or a small group of people may proffer a vision that conflict with the interests of the larger group. However, what we should not forget is that although our voices may at times be off-key from each other, we walk this path together with sincerity and passion. In the end, we are all dharma brothers and sisters trying to manifest the vision of Venerable Sotaesan in this contemporary and increasingly scientifically civilized world, so we need to come together. Before pointing my finger at others, I should reflect on myself first; before making assumptions about other's opinions, I should put myself in their shoes first.

After one of the prayer services one teacher who specializes in music pointed out to me, "Actually, those few who you thought were off-key today were actually singing the hymn properly. The rest of you were off-key."
