필라델피아의 미주선학대학원에 살 때, 나는 한 분의 살아있는 부처님을 뵙게 된다. 바로 초대 총장이셨던 보산 고문국 종사님이다. 서울대학교에서 교수로 오랫동안 재직하셨고, 나중에는 서울대 부총장까지 역임하셨고, 그곳에서 은퇴를 하셨다. 대산종사께서 당시 미국에 새로운 학교를 세웠는데 아직 총장이 없어 보산님이 하시면 좋겠다는 말씀을 하셨다. 보산님께서 어떻게 마음을 먹으셨는지는 확실히 알지 못하지만, 쉬운 결정은 아니었을 것 같다. 그러나 보산님께서는 결국 "네, 가겠습니다"하시고, 미국으로 가셨다.

보산님을 처음 뵈었을 때가 아직도 기억난다. 키가 작은데도 엄청난 카리스마가 있어서 서양인들도 꼼짝 못했다. 워낙 예리하셨기 때문이다. 하지만 미국이라는 타지에서 학교를 새롭게 설립하려면 많은 스트레스를 받았을 것이다. 모든 것을 영어로 해야 하는데다가 예산도 적고, 미국 정부의 승인도 받아야 한다. 무엇보다도 미국 현지인 직원들과 한국인 교무님들이 화목하게 지내기 위해 엄청난 노력이 필요했다. 보산님은 그 모든 일을 다 해내실 수 있었다. 어떻게 가능했을까? 그것은 이 학교를 이끌어가겠다는 결정을 내리자마자 주인 정신을 가지고 임하셨기 때문이었다.

보산님은 한국에서 편안히 사실 수 있었는데, 왜 미국에 가셨을까? 가끔 이런 생각을 하게 된다. 왜 힘든 길을 선택하셨던 걸까? 이 산 부처님의 원동력은 무엇일을까? 진실함, 참, 변치 않는 사랑이 아닐까? 스승님을 모시는 그 순연한 사랑. 법을 실천하는 사랑. 회상을 위한 사랑. 인류에게 주는 사랑. 그분이 사시는 모습을 직접 보고 나서, 깊은 인상과 큰 감동을 받았다. 그리고 지금까지 나에게 남아있다. 그 감동이 참 교화라고 생각한다.

When I lived in Philadelphia and attended the Won Institute of Graduate Studies I had the good fortune of meeting a living buddha. He was at the time the president of the school, Dr. Yoon Suk Koh. After spending many years as a professor at Seoul National University and then as Vice President of the same school, he reached the age of retirement. After retirement, the Third Prime Dharma Master Daesan requested that Dr. Koh take the post of president of the Won Institute of Graduate Studies, since they were in dire need for someone to run the school. I am sure the decision to run a new school in the U.S. was not an easy decision to make, yet he made a firm decision to lead the school.

I still remember the first day I met Dr. Koh. His small frame could not hide his charisma and intelligence, which were traits that Westerners could not ignore. He was sharp, articulate, and extremely meticulous when writing documents. Yet, imagine the stresses of running a new school where everything is in English, the school has to function on a small budget, and the school awaits accreditation from the government. More importantly, how do you create an atmosphere where western staff and eastern kyomus can work in harmony? And yet Dr. Koh was able to accomplish all of this. How was this possible? The moment he made the decision to take on the role as president, he put forth all his effort to fulfill the vision of the school.

I often wondered why he left the comforts of his home in Korea to take on this new challenge. What drove him to make such a decision? Could this be honest, true, and unchanging love? A pure love for one's mentor, love for the teachings, love for the community, and love for humanity? Just observing the way he lived his life with my own two eyes left such a deep impression and moved me to the point that his actions never leave my memory. To me, the ability to leave a lasting impression on someone through one's own actions is true edification.
