지난주에 영국의 패션 디자이너인 폴 스미스에 관한 다큐멘터리 프로를 시청했다. 그는 나이 70인데도 여전히 영국 패션업계의 주요 인물이다. 그의 생애에 관한 내용을 보면서 그의 따뜻한 리더십과, 좋은 의상에 관한 날카로운 안목, 그리고 무엇보다 자신의 일에 관한 열정에 깊은 인상을 받았다. 패션에 관해 이야기할 때 그의 눈이 빛나는 모습을 보니, 그가 자신이 하는 일을 얼마나 좋아하는지 알겠고, 죽을 때까지 행복할 것 같았다. 그는 자신의 천직을 찾아낸 사람이었다.

나는 목표를 추구해가며 살아오지 못했을지 모를 세상의 모든 사람들에 대해 생각해 보았다. 그런 사람들은 그저 자신에게 주어진 일에 우연히 종사하게 되었을지도 모르고 아니면, 지금도 여전히 이렇게 자문하고 있을지 모른다. 내가 정말로 평생 하고 싶었던 일은 무엇이었을까? 너무나 많은 사람들이 자신의 진정한 재능과 접목되지 못하고, 그래서 자신이 진정으로 달성할 수 있는 능력이 무엇인지 알지 못한 채 살아가고 있다. 그런 의미에서 그들은 자신이 진실로 어떤 사람인지 알지 못한다. 분명한 사실은 우리 모두는 무한한 잠재력을 가지고 태어났다는 것이다.

소태산 대종사는 우리의 무한한 잠재력을 확신했다. 일원상 서원문에서는, '일원은 천지·부모·동포·법률의 본원이요, 제불·조사·범부·중생의 성품'이라고 했다. 이 한 구절이 우리 모두에게 용기를 준다. 이 말씀의 의미는, 우리의 본성이 부처의 본성과 다를 바 없으며, 따라서 우리는 부처가 그러했듯이 깨달음에 이를 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있다는 것이다.

만일 우리 모두가 깨달음에 이를 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있다면 우리에게는 우리의 진정한 천직을 찾아낼 수 있는 능력이 있다. 하지만 깨달음에 이르기 위해 끊임없는 훈련이 필요하듯이, 우리의 열정을 찾아내기 위해서도 역시 커다란 노력이 요구된다.

그러므로 여러분이 만약 무엇을 좋아하는지 찾아낸다면, 나는 칭찬을 아끼지 않는다. 만일 여러분이 아직도 그것을 찾는 과정에 있다면 포기하지 말자. 우리 모두에게는 특별한 재능과 열정이 있으며, 그것이 우리로 하여금 상상했던 것보다 훨씬 더 큰 것을 달성하도록 우리에게 영감을 줄 것이기 때문이다. 우리에게는 놀라운 상상력과 감각 그리고 영성이 있다.

Last week I watched a documentary on the British fashion designer Paul Smith. At the age of 70, he is still a key figure in the British fashion industry. While watching his life story I was struck by his compassionate leadership, keen eye for vintage clothing, but most of all his passion for fashion. The light in his eyes when he talked about fashion showed me that he absolutely loves what he does and would die a happy person. He found his calling.

I then started thinking about all the people in the world who may have never experienced a purpose driven life. They may have fell into work handed down to them, or chose a profession to please their parents, or still sit with the question: What do I really want to do with my life? Too many people never connect with their true talents and therefore don't know what they're really capable of achieving. In that sense, they don't know who they really are. What is true is that we are all born with limitless potential. We have extraordinary powers of imagination, intuition, feeling, and spirituality.

Master Sotaesan believed in our limitless potential. In the Il-Won-Sang Vow it says, "Il-Won is the nature of all buddhas, enlightened masters, ordinary humans, and sentient beings". This one line should give us all great courage. It means your nature is no different from buddha, therefore you have the potential to attain enlightenment just as buddha did. If we all have the potential to attain awakening, then we all have the potential to find our true calling. But just as attaining enlightenment requires constant training, finding our passion also requires great effort. So if you have found what you love to do I applaud you, but if you're still seeking, then my advice is to not give up because we all have distinctive talents and passions that can inspire us to achieve far more than we may imagine.
