천지자연은 우리의 가장 큰 스승이다. 태양은 인종, 민족, 성별 혹은 연령을 구별하지 않으므로 모두를 고루 비춰주며 동쪽에서 뜨고 서쪽에서 진다.

가을이 오면 가지의 잎은 스스로 색을 바꾸고 시간이 지나면 가지에 땅으로 떨어진다. 흐르는 시냇물은 힘들어 하거나 강제하지 않고도 바위의 구멍과 틈을 파고 들어가 결국에는 바다로 나가는 길을 찾는다.

산은 단단하고 깊게 대지에 뿌리를 내린 채 크고 작은 수많은 생명들에게 안식처를 제공해준다. 보름달은 활기에 넘치는 대도시든, 고요한 시골 마을이든, 고루 밝게 비추면서 하루의 끝과 새로운 날의 시작을 알려준다.

이러한 자연 가운데서 만물은 은현자재하면서, 마치 밀물처럼 몰려왔다가 썰물처럼 밀려나가며, 서로 하나로 합했다 다시 나뉘어지면서 우주의 진동과 함께 자연스럽게 변화해 나간다. 자연은 절대로 "나를 봐라!"든가 혹은 "오늘 내가 해준 것 갚아!"라고 소리치는 법이 없다. 대신, 자연은 어떤 것도 인정해 달라든가, 존중해 달라든가 혹은 보수를 달라든가 하며 요구하는 법 없이 그저 여여하게 행동할 따름이다.

이렇게 천지자연은 스스로의 일을 하면서 우리가 스스로 우리의 일을 할 수 있게 해준다. 단지 우리가 대가를 받고 일하는 것이 아니라, 우리 자신이 과연 어떤 존재인지 진실하게 본래자리를 보게 해줄 뿐이다.

우리가 과거 여러 생동안 쌓아온 업력을 풀어놓기 시작할 때 우리는 서서히 우리 자신도 역시 자연의 일부라는 사실을 깨닫기 시작할 것이다. 완벽하고 온전한, 그리고 지극히 평등하고 비이기적인 존재로서의 나. 이러한 사실을 우리는 곧잘 잊고 있다. 대산종사는 "소리 나는 일은 큰일이 못된다. 천지가 무슨 소리하며 일하더냐. 대혁명은 소리가 없다"고 말했다.

오늘날 우리는 강연이나 교과서 혹은 동영상을 통해서만 배우는 것으로 생각한다. 하지만 소리없는 스승은 항상 우리 주위에 있다. 잠시 틈을 내어 자연으로부터 배우자. 자연은 매 순간 언제나 말없이 우리에게 새로운 가르침을 베풀어준다.

Nature is our greatest teacher. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west for all humanity regardless of ethnicity, race, gender, or age. When autumn comes around the leaves naturally change color and eventually fall to the ground without clinging to the branches. A stream of water penetrates into the pores and crevices of the rocks without struggle or force eventually finding its way into the large ocean. The mountain stands firm and solid providing a home for innumerable creatures both large and small. The full moon shines brightly over vibrant cosmopolitan cities and tranquil rural villages signaling the end of one day and the beginning of a new one.

In nature, things appear and disappear, ebb and flow, unite and separate, and naturally move with the heart beat of the universe. It never shouts, "Look at me!" or "Repay me for what I just did for you today." Instead, it moves gracefully in silence without asking for recognition, reverence, or repayment. It does its job so that we can go about doing our job; not just the piece of work we get paid to do, but the great pursuit to discover who we truly are.

When we start to unravel the many layers we have accumulated over the years we slowly begin to realize that we too are nature: perfect, complete, utterly impartial and selfless. We just forget sometimes.

Master Daesan once said, "Great work is achieved without making a sound. Does nature make noise while it works? Great revolutions are silent."

Nowadays we think teachings have to be imparted through speech, text, or video. But the silent teacher is always around us. Take a moment to learn from nature. It teaches us something new every moment without saying one word.
