The 20th of January marked the beginning of a new era in American society. People from all walks of life, economic backgrounds, genders and races have found new hope in recognizing their oneness. Cooperative efforts to ensure social justice and stand up for equal rights and respect for everyone are now the first priority. Important single issues and the identities of particular groups still require attention and effort, but those efforts will succeed better in an atmosphere of consensus on our highest values. The events in the U.S. in late January are reflective of the trend worldwide. The People have decided to speak, and to be heard; and that will change the world.

The Mother era is rising at this moment. The effects of the "Arab Spring" were temporary because it was only the earliest sign of thawing; the "American Spring" will take the warming trend further, and so on around the world. The time is right for Won Buddhism to guide and enrich the spiritual transformation that brings about this turning. The time is right for Won Buddhism to establish a fluent English-speaking leadership in the U.S., with true equality between female and male kyomus, between old and young, and especially between ordained and lay members. The turning will reverse all inequalities in its time anyway. Better to flow with its movement, without resistance or clinging to traditional ways.

Americans are looking at Won Buddhism in two ways: first, with admiration, gratitude and dedication to the wisdom of the Founding Master's teachings and for his generosity in sharing his enlightenment with us; and then with dismay, disappointment and discomfort at the hierarchical and asymmetrical structure of the order as it still is today. Life is change, and change may be growth or deterioration; it cannot stay the same.

Sound thought that underlies right action entails acting at the correct moment, not missing the right time. The moment for a new experiment in the U.S. is right, and the order is ready to do this, even though many of the kyomunims do not feel ready. Uncertainty and hesitation, waiting until all the plans are perfect, will result in missing the right moment, which can never be corrected.

Wisdom is knowing when to act. The modernization of Won Buddhism U.S.A. can begin a flowering that will shed virtue and happiness across the land. I pray for the Order's courage and wisdom to manifest with perfect faith, so that practical application of the Buddhadharma becomes widely known and practiced in the U.S.
