만일 20년 전에 누군가 내게, 혹시 영산이라는 시골 마을에 살 것인지 물어보았더라면, 나는 아마 웃으면서 이렇게 말했을 것이다. "농담하지 마세요." 그런데 지금 나는 바로 그 영산성지에서, 가까운 곳의 나무와 산들을 내다보면서 이 글을 쓰고 있다!
나는 영산의 아름다움을 매순간 느끼고 있다. 새벽 명상하러 가는 길에 장관을 이루고 있는 별들을 바라볼 때, 그리고 활짝 피어난 생기 넘치는 오색 꽃들이 봄의 시작을 알려줄 때이다. 아침 일찍 그리고 저녁 잠자리에 들기 전에 울리는 범종소리, 점심 공양을 하기 위해 식당으로 가는 학생들의 웃음소리를 들을 때, 인근의 산에 오르거나 푸른 초원을 내려다보면서 기도할 때, 도반과 산책을 하고 우리들의 수행에 관해 이야기를 나눌 때, 소태산 대종사의 탄생가를 들르면서 겸손과 자비의 덕을 회상할 때도 그렇다.
우리가 찾아가는 세상 도처에서, 우리가 만나는 사람, 우리가 부딪치는 모든 일들에서 우리는 매순간 아름다움을 발견할 수 있다. 그런데 세상은 폭력적인 행위와 분열과 테러로 인간의 어두운 면을 드러내면서 우리를 공격한다. 하지만 우리는 결코 희망을 잃어서는 안된다. 테러리스트의 공격을 받고 어떤 아버지는 이렇게 아들에게 말했다고 한다, "저 사람들은 총을 가지고 있을지 모르지만, 우리는 꽃을 가지고 있단다." 어린 소년은 그 뜻을 깨닫고 아버지를 바라보면서 이렇게 말했다고 한다, "여기 우리를 보호해줄 꽃과 촛불이 있어요."
나는 영산을 인간성의 꽃과 촛불이라고 생각하고 싶다. 세상이 아무리 잔인하고 불공평하다 할지라도, 신선한 봄날, 맑은 물은 항상 이곳에서 흘러나와, 세상의 아무리 어두운 곳까지도 빛과 사랑을 가져다준다. 영산을 찾아오는 사람은 모두 누구나 바로 그 빛과 사랑을 가지고 돌아갈 것이다. 그래서 영산의 아름다움은 그들이 가는 모든 곳과 그들이 만나는 모든 사람의 마음을 감동시킬 것이다.
If you had told me 20 years ago that one day I would be living in a rural village called Youngsan I would've probably chuckled and said, "Stop kidding me." And yet, here I am writing these words down as I look out at nearby trees and mountains- in Youngsan!
The beauty of Youngsan can be captured in moments. Looking up to see a panoply of stars early in the morning on the walk to meditation. Noticing the vibrant colored flowers bloom, signaling to us the start of spring. Listening to the faint sound of the large bell early in the morning and just before heading to bed. Noticing the sound of students laughing as they walk to the cafeteria to eat lunch. Climbing a nearby mountain and offering a prayer while overlooking the green fields.
Taking a walk with a dharma friend and sharing stories about our practice. Visiting Sotaesan's birthplace to be reminded of the virtues of humility and compassion. All around the world we find moments of beauty in the places we visit, the people we meet, and the things we encounter. Yet, the world also assaults us with acts of violence, division, and terror revealing the complicated side of humanity. We should, however, never lose hope. As one father told his son after a terrorist attack, "They might have guns but we have flowers." The little boy finally understood and looked to his father and said, "The flowers and the candles are here to protect us."
I would like to think of Youngsan as humanity's flowers and candles; that no matter how cruel or unfair the situation, a fresh spring of water always flows from this place, bringing light and love to even the darkest corners of the world. And that every person who visits Youngsan carries that light and love with them wherever they go, so that Youngsan's beauty touches every place they visit and every person they meet.
