As a child, the picture of Master Daesan holding hands with Pope John Paul II left a strong impression in my young mind. Two religious leaders from different traditions, coming together with the wish to promote world peace. It was on this day, May 6th, 1984 that Master Daesan imparted to the Pope his message of 'One World.' I reflected on the importance of this message as I sat waiting at an airport for my next flight. One World.

I sat in an empty chair and carefully observed the people around me: teenagers playing games while waiting to board their flight, business people looking at their laptops or talking into their smartphones, mothers holding their babies, an old man reading a book, a young girl trying to find an outlet to recharge her phone. All of us came from different countries, all headed to various destinations, and yet in this moment we shared this one airport space. On this day, it was tangible to see the increasing 'oneness' of the world in a physical sense. As with everything, however, when two distinct phenomena come into contact there is a reaction, sometimes positive, neutral, or negative. Unfortunately, there are many cases when the encounter ends in conflict or violence.

One of the main reasons for these conflicts is our inability to go beyond our boundaries. We are stuck in our 'small house' of me, my family, my school, my workplace, and so on. Not only do we create spatial boundaries but also mental boundaries, so the world becomes dualistic, me versus the other. However, when we have the courage to look inwards we can free ourselves from the small 'I'and realize the oneness of all things. So ask yourself, What are my boundaries?

When Master Daesan held Pope John Paul II's hand I saw many boundaries fade away. The boundary of 'my religion' versus 'your religion' or 'my country' versus 'your country.' The moment their hands touched they were brothers working towards the same mission, creating One World.
