지난 한 해는 법신불 사은의 가호 속에 온 국민과 교도들의 정성과 염원으로 나라 안팎의 어려움을 극복하고 크게 밝은 미래를 열어갈 새 기틀을 마련한 뜻깊은 해였습니다. 새해에는 이런 성과를 바탕으로 우리 함께 어변성룡(魚變成龍)하는 대운을 따라 우리나라를 세계 일등의 도덕 국가로 거듭나게 하고, 남과 북이 상생 평화의 길로 나아갈 수 있도록 더욱 지혜를 모아야 하겠습니다.
지금 우리 교단은 전 교도들의 원력과 정성으로 백주년 기념성업을 성스럽게 봉행하고, 그 마무리 사업의 하나로 대한민국 수도 서울에 소태산기념관을 신축하고 있습니다. 소태산기념관이 재가출가 전 교도의 합력으로 원만하게 완공되어 소태산 대종사의 구세(救世) 경륜이 널리 펼쳐지는 대성전이 되고, 국내 교화는 물론 세계 교화의 전진 기지로 활용되기를 염원합니다.
원기 103년 새해는 우리 모두가 그동안 정진 적공 하며 쌓아온 법력에 바탕하여 소태산 대종사의 일대 경륜인 낙원세계를 힘차게 개척하는 한 해가 되기를 염원합니다. 그러기 위해서는,
첫째, 나를 이기는 훈련으로 대자유인(大自由人)이 됩시다.
미몽 속에 헤매는 범부 중생이 숙세의 업력에서 오는 고통을 이겨내기 위해서는 반드시 일원교법(一圓敎法)을 표준으로 심신을 훈련하여 내가 나를 이길 수 있는 힘을 길러 나가야 하겠습니다. 이 법을 만나고 이 회상을 만났을 때 마음을 더욱 가다듬어 이기적인 나, 욕심에 불타는 나, 게으르고 거만한 나, 방종에 흐르는 나를 이겨서 마음의 자유를 얻는 도원수(都元帥)가 되고 마음병을 치료하는 의사가 됩시다. 끝없는 정진 적공으로 욕심의 벽을 무너뜨리고, 마침내 유리벽과도 같은 수자상의 벽을 넘어서 낙원세상의 대자유인이 됩시다.
둘째, 매사에 은혜를 발견하는 대보은인(大報恩人)이 됩시다.
우리는 은혜로운 법신불 사은의 품에 살고 있으면서도 그 은혜를 알지 못하고 어리석게도 배은(背恩) 생활을 하고 있습니다. 낳고 기르고 가르쳐 주신 부모님의 은혜를 망각하고, 진리를 가르치고 훈련해 주신 스승님의 은혜를 자각하지 못하고 사는 일이 많으니 이 얼마나 어리석은 일입니까? 이제부터라도 천지 부모 동포 법률에서 입은 한량없는 은혜를 발견하여 보은하고 보은합시다. 매일 매일 만나는 모든 생령과 만물로부터 은혜를 발견하여 원망심을 감사심으로 돌리는 대보은인이 됩시다. 그러면 내가 바로 부처가 되고 만물이 나의 보호자가 되어 영생을 복전 속에서 거래하는 가운데 자비로운 부처를 이룰 것입니다.
셋째, 낙원 세계를 개척하는 대불공인(大佛供人)이 됩시다.
돌이켜보면 지난날 우리는 너와 나를 상대 짓고 너와 내가 경쟁하며 오직 상대를 이기려는 이기주의적 삶을 살아왔습니다. 사상과 이념을 앞세워 서로서로 다투기에 바빴으며, 과학 문명의 발달에 따라 정신이 쇠약해져 물질의 지배를 받는 노예 생활을 해왔습니다. 하지만 이제 우리는 과거의 잔재를 청산하고 소태산 대종사께서 염원하신 모두가 성공하는 대성공 시대를 열어가야 하겠습니다.
물질문명과 도덕문명이 조화를 이루는 참 문명 세계를 건설하고, 진리는 하나 세계도 하나 인류는 한 가족이 되는 하나의 세계 건설을 위해 함께 노력해 나갑시다. 그러기 위해서 우리 모두 전 세계가 함께 공생공영으로 원융무애한 낙원 공동체를 만들어가는 개척자가 되어야 하겠습니다. 이것이 바로 일원교법을 말로 글로 행동으로 전하는 교화 불공자가 되는 길이며, 부처님의 일이며 그 일을 하는 이가 바로 대불공인입니다.
아무쪼록 새해를 맞이하여 재가출가 모두가 마음공부로 새 시대를 열어가는 대자유인이 되고 대보은인이 되고 대불공인이 되어, 소태산 대종사께서 간절히 염원하시던 낙원 세계 건설의 개척자, 일원 세계 건설의 주인공이 되도록 다 함께 노력합시다.

Great Leaders for the World of Il-Won
In our Order, we held the sacred centennial celebration project with great sincerity and dedication from all Won Buddhist members. Currently, we are constructing the Sotaesan Memorial Hall in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, as the culminating enterprise of the celebration.
I sincerely wish that we safely build the Sotaesan Memorial Hall with the cooperation of all Won Buddhist lay and clergy members. Upon its completion, may this Hall become a sanctuary showing Venerable Sotaesan's grand vision to save the world. I also sincerely pray that this sanctuary will be utilized as a forward base for the Won Buddhist dharma for both domestic and international edification.
In this 103rd new year of Won Buddhism,I pray that we may cultivate the world of paradise,based on the dharma power we have accumulated thusfar,through our diligent and continuous practice.This is the great vision that Venerable Sotaesan, founding master of Won Buddhism, wanted to realize.
In order to do that,
First, let us become people of great freedom, through spiritual training, by overcoming our limited selves.
This is necessary in order to help all sentient beings who wander in the dream state of ignorance, to overcome the sufferings caused by their karmic forces from time immemorial. Won Buddhists should cultivate spiritual power, the power of the mind, by training our minds and bodies with the guiding standard of Il Won dharma. Since we have had this precious opportunity to learn the dharma within this Order, let us become an army to conquer all the egoistic aspects of ourselves which are filled with greed, laziness, arrogance and self-indulgence. And let us together become doctors to cure the sicknesses of the human mind. By demolishing the barrier of greed through the accumulation of diligent and devotional practice, and transcending the concept of seniority, which is like an invisible glass wall, let us become people of great freedom.
Second, let us become people of great gratitude, finding Grace in every situation.
Even though we live in the grace of the benevolent Dharmakaya Buddha, we fail to realize this, and lead lives of ingratitude. So many times, we forget the grace of the parents who gave birth to us, brought us up and taught us. So many times, we live without recognizing the grace of teachers who taught and trained us based on the Truth. How ignorant we are!
From now on, let us nurture the grace that we have received, and return our gratitude. By discovering grace in every being, either animate or inanimate, let us transform the mind of resentment into the mind of gratitude. By doing so, we will become buddhas, and then all sentient beings will become our protectors, so that we may all become compassionate buddhas possessing blessings and merits throughout eternity.
Third, let us become people who make great buddha offerings to create a world of paradise.
Reflecting upon the past, we have lived egoistical lives, constantly comparing and competing with each other in order to be better than one another. In the name of ideologies, we have been busy fighting each other. With the development of a scientific civilization, the human spirit has been weakened and we have been enslaved by material. However, we should remove the residues from the past and open a new era in which all beings become as successful as Sotaesan envisioned. Let us continue our efforts to create a truly civilized world wherein material and moral progress is balanced, and let us build a world of oneness where all human beings are of one family. In order to realize that, we should become pioneers to create a paradisiacal community where all people live in harmony and prosper together. This is the path of becoming a person of edification and a person who makes a buddha offering by delivering the Il-Won Dharma with speech and writings. The person who does this work is the very person of great buddha offering and shares the enterprise of all buddhas.
Hopefully, in this New Year, may all lay and ordained members of Won Buddhism become people of great freedom, become people of great gratitude, and become people of great buddha offerings to open this new era of mind practice. Let us all make efforts to become pioneers to create the world of paradise and transform ourselves into great leaders to establish the world of Il-Won which was the Founding Master Sotaesan's most sincere hope.
