One of the gifts of living in Youngsan is awakening to a snow-covered winter wonderland and marveling at the splendor of mother nature. When the snow covers the grounds of Youngsan, there is a quieting of the outside world. Thoreau once said about walking in winter that "Every walk is a sort of crusade."

What he meant was that the winter world of quietude invites a person to explore one's interior world. What we begin to realize is that within us is a warm and compassionate heart or in the words of Albert Camus, "an invincible summer." And just as the sun slowly melts the cold snow on the ground, our warm hearts have the power to melt away the ignorant minds of sentient beings.

As Master Sotaesan once said, "The great loving-kindness and great compassion of the Buddha radiates more warmth and brightness than the sun." I would like to think Master Sotaesan was sending us the following message: Do not lose hope in times of hardship.

We see this over and over again in our history of Won-Buddhism: the warm heart of our sages melting the ignorant minds of sentient beings. While the levee project was being carried out in Youngsan by the members of the unit, a wealthy man in a neighboring village, witnessing the project, created a dispute and submitted an application to the county authority for permission to reclaim the tideland himself.

Seeing that the members of the unit resented the man deeply for causing so much worry, Master Sotaesan reassured them, "At a time like this, if you transcend the conception of self and others and diligently work toward the public well-being, this matter will naturally be resolved fairly." I can only imagine that upon hearing these words, all resentment in his disciples' mind dissipated in an instant.

So, as I continue walking in the white snow, I allow the cold season to help me go inwards and experience the richness of life and the grace of our founding master.
