[원불교신문=송상진 교무] 영산에 살고 있으면 항상 원불교의 역사, 그중에서도 특히 교단의 초기 역사와 접촉하면서 살게 된다. 상상해보라. 첫 제자들이 이 지역에서 모아졌다. 우리의 선진님들은 함께 일하고, 먹고, 기도하고 함께 공부한 것이다. 바로 이 시골 마을에서. 나는 때때로 선진들이 얼마나 희생을 했는지 잊어버릴 때가 있다. 내가 한국에 오기 전에는 교단관의 중요성을 알지 못했던 것이다. 

나는 언제나 이것은 미국의 원불교이고, 저것은 한국의 원불교라고 생각했다. 그러나 한국에 머물면서, 이 영산에 살면서 보니까 내가 무지했다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 

그 교단관의 중요성을 가르쳐주셨던 분은 바로 상산 박장식 종사이었다. 상산 종사의 전기를 읽고 그 어른의 신심에 감동을 받았다. 상산 종사은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "우리 교역자들의 실력은 개인적인 실력으로 끝나지 않는다. 바로 개인의 역량이 교단의 역량이요." 상산 종사는 항상 자신을 발전시키고, 교단 대표로 살아 왔다. 교단과 하나가 됐다는 것이다.

나중에 인터뷰에서는 이렇게 말했다. "대종사로부터 전무출신을 하명 받고 기쁜 마음으로만 생활 했는데 지금 생각하면 개인 생활로 끝나지 않고 이처럼 교단이나 사회에 봉공할 수 있었던 것이 얼마나 감사한지 모르겠어요." 이 인터뷰 듣고 대산종사의 법문이 떠올랐다. "스승의 뜻을 오롯이 받들 수 있는 한 제자만 있어도 이 회상은 만대에 걱정이 없다. 변하지 않을 신심을 가져야 하느니라."

그래서, 스스로 생각을 해보았다. 제자로써 어떤 특성이 중요할까? 여러가지가 있겠지만 나는 '든든함'이라고 생각한다. 어디로 가던지, 어떤 일 시키던지, 그 곳이 어디든 최선을 다해서 스승의 뜻을 그대로 이루어질 수 있게 하는 것이 '든든함'이 아닐까? 

One of the blessings of living in Youngsan is always staying in touch with the history of Won-Buddhism; especially the formative years of the order. At times, I imagine the first disciples gathering in this area, working, eating, praying, and studying in this rural village. I'm ashamed to admit that many times I forget their years of sacrifice to the order. In fact, before living in Korea, I didn't give much thought to the importance of the order.

I always categorized Won-Buddhism into 'Won-Buddhism in the West' and "Won-Buddhism in Korea." However, my years in Korea, and especially living in Youngsan, has taught me that I was completely ignorant.  

I learned about the importance of the order through Venerable Sangsan. After reading his autobiography, I was moved by his deep faith and commitment to the order. He wrote, "The competency of our ministers does not end with personal ability. The capacity of the individual becomes the capacity of the order." His life story shows a commitment to self-improvement and self-reflection, because he didn't separate his life from the order, but rather regarded himself as a representative to the outside world.

He later said in an interview, "I'm grateful that I was able to contribute to society and to the order and not limit my abilities to benefiting my own life." Ven. Sangsan's life reminded me of a teaching from Prime Dharma Master Daesan who said, "As long as there is just one person who carries out the intention of the master, then the order has nothing to worry about for eternity. Unwavering faith is essential."  

I thought to myself, what could be one of the best qualities of a disciple? If I were to express it in one word it would be: reliability. Wherever I go, whatever work I'm assigned, if I do my best to carry out the wishes of the masters, wouldn't this be considered 'reliability'?
