[원불교신문=송상진 교무] 대산종사는 법위등급이 천지개벽 이후에 처음 나온 법이라고 했다. 또한 소태산 대종사는 당시 제자들에게 매일 저녁 한번씩 법위등급을 외우도록 지도했다.  왜 그렇게 했을까 생각해봤다. 

당시 제자들은 대부분 문맹 농부였는데 대종사가 "너희들은 여래 될 수 있다"는 말을 했을 때 과연 믿었을까? 의심하지 않았을까, "나는 농부인데? 여래?" 그래서 매일 법위등급을 외우라는 말씀으로 대각여래위와 더욱 가까워지게 할 수 있게끔 하지 않았을까? 

더 멋진 것은 법위등급은 여래위까지 올라가는 안내도일 뿐만 아니라 일원 세계를 건설하는 설계도, 천여래 만보살을 배출할 교본이다. 그래서 확실히 개교의 동기와 연결했고 내가 확실히 어디 있는지 알고, 모든 공부인들이 지향해 나가야 할 목표가 확실하다. 만일 대종사가 〈정전〉에 법위등급을 밝혀 주지 않았다면 지금 우리는 무엇을 표준삼아 공부를 하고 있을까?

대산종사 말씀하시기를 "주세불이신 대종사께서 이 회상을 열어 주지 않으셨다면 큰 도인을 알아보기 어렵고 공부길을 잡기도 어려웠을 것이니." 

〈정전〉에 이렇게 나온다. "보통급은 유무식 남녀노소 선악귀천을 막론하고 처음으로 불문에 귀의 하여 보통급 십계를 받은 사람의 급이다." 불문에 들어오면 누구나 다 똑같이 보통급에서 출발해 모두 여래위에 갈 수 있다는 말이다. 

과거 어두운 시대의 회상은 한 스승과 한 제자가 은밀히 법을 전했는데 지금은 밝은 시대의 원만한 회상이라 공전으로 법을 전한다. 이것이 참 중요한 포인트다. 똑같은 시점에 시작하고 지향해 나가야 할 목표도 똑같다. 

Third Prime Dharma Master Daesan once said that the Stages of Dharma Status is the first dharma of its kind since the great opening of heaven and earth. During Master Sotaesan's time, his disciples recited the Stages of Dharma Status every night before going to bed. I often thought about why he would ask his disciples to recite this dharma daily. 

The majority of them were illiterate farmers, so they might have thought to themselves, "Can I really attain awakening like the Buddha? Me? An illiterate farmer?" I believe Master Sotaesan's intention was to bring them closer to the truth that becoming a tathagata was not an impossibility. 

What's more amazing is that these stages of dharma status are not just a guide for our practice, but the blueprint of establishing a world of Il-Won and a map to producing numberless bodhisattvas throughout eternity. Therefore, we see a direct relation with the Founding Motive of the Teaching: I know exactly where I am in my practice, and the exact direction I should be heading. What if Master Sotaesan did not create the stages of dharma status? What would we use as our standard to assess practice?

Master Daesan said, "If Master Sotaesan, the newly presiding Buddha, did not open this order it would be difficult to recognize a great sage and difficult to grasp the right way of practice." 

The scripture says that the "ordinary grade is the status of people who have first taken refuge in the gateway of the buddha…regardless of whether they are learned or ignorant, male or female, old or young, good or bad, or of high or low status." This implies that all people enter the stage of ordinary grade and can all reach the stage of the tathagata.

In the past, teachings were only transmitted from a master to a disciple, but now the teachings are publicly declared to all. I think this is an important point. Everyone starts at the ordinary grade and everyone is guided to the same goal of the greatly enlightened tathagata.
