As a way of monitoring my health, I weigh myself regularly. Stepping on a scale, I used to think "Wouldn't it be nice to have a scale that could weigh my mind just like a scale weighing the body? If the scale indicates a heavy mind, I could meditate more to empty my mind, and pay special attention not to fill up unnecessary burden on mind.

Upon looking at data on a smart scale that measures not only weight but also body fat, muscle mass, visceral fat, hydration, and basic metabolism, a thought arose again. What if we could see not only mind weight but also love, compassion, understanding, greed, jealousy, anger and ignorance in numbers? It might be something that we don't want others to see but it would help us see ourselves and motivate us to find and practice proper methods to keep a healthy mind.

We maintain our physical health by eating nutritious food, avoiding unhealthy food, and building muscles through workout. The same principle can be applied to our mind health. We could maintain a healthy mind by nurturing wholesome thoughts, avoiding harmful thoughts, and cultivating three great powers (Cultivating the Spirit, Inquiry into Human Affairs and Universal Principles, Choice in Action)

The first step in the practice for a healthy mind is 'awareness'. It's important to be aware of thoughts and emotions arising in our mind and to watch them as they are. This is because that one thought or that one emotion is expressed through our bodies, mouths, and minds and becomes our habit through repetition and our habits determine our lives. Therefore, one who knows this doesn't neglect even a small thought and emotion.

"Human nature is originally neither wholesome nor unwholesome, but good or bad character comes into existence in accordance with one's habits. Habits are formed as one's initial thought responds repeatedly to various causes and conditions around oneself."(〈The Scriptures of Won Buddhism〉 Practice #30)
