Everything in the world changes - the weather, seasons, politics, society, relationships, our bodies, emotions, thoughts, etc. Nothing lasts forever. Looking from afar, the mountain may always look the same, but in fact many things in it are changing. It is called 'anicca' in Pali, meaning 'impermanence' in Buddhism. Enlightened masters say, "Do not mistake change for ever; don't cling to it." This is because most of our sufferings are caused by this delusion and obsession.

Not long ago, feeling the chilly wind, I reorganized my closet. As I put my summer clothes in and warm clothes out, I realized another season has already passed. A few days later, the heat came back and people were walking in summer clothes. Taking short clothes out again was somewhat bothersome. How fickle the weather was! Then, I realized that I was complaining about the fact that the weather was not being consistent for my convenience.

In the past, I used to get irritated on a rainy day because I needed to hold an umbrella. I thought that my mind would no longer be swayed by change of weather, but I find myself still bothered, if not frustrated by it. It would be nice if I could simply cope with changes of conditions. But my tendency is to first deny or resist the changes that I don't like. Rather than judging changes, I should focus on embracing them as they are.

"Just as the weather is sometimes fine and sometimes gloomy, so too is a human being's spiritual energy sometimes refreshed and sometimes melancholy and the surrounding sensory conditions also sometimes favorable and sometimes unfavorable. These are also natural changes in accordance with the principle of cause and effect. When a person who understands this principle experiences these change, his mind of cultivation will simply be just at it is and as unconcerned as heaven and earth. "
