We go through difficult times in life. Sometimes things do not go our way, we have to deal with difficult people, or we go through unforeseen hardships. When we encounter these undesirable situations, we could be angry and resentful, or humbly accepting and patient. It is up to us to choose how to response.

I choose to humbly accept hardships and persevere with them. It is not easy, but I am convinced that it is a better choice than being angry and resentful. As one of the ways to help me keep this mindset, I read aloud the “Dharma Words for leading the Soul before and after Death.” Reading dharma words about the principal of cause and effect, life and death helps my busy mind to calm down. Then I become more understanding and accepting of the present.

In particular, the phrase “Are you listening?” from “Dharma Words for leading the Soul before and after Death” remains in my ears like the lyrics of a popular song, and it makes me become aware of what I am listening to at the moment. We are always surrounded by sounds. There is a sound to be heard like a car passing or strong wind. And there is a sound that we choose to listen to like a radio station we set. There is a sound bringing peace and wisdom; and there is a sound causing conflicts and anguish. Depending on which sound we focus on, our lives can be transform.

Master Sotaesan asks us if we are listening well. What am I listening to?
