A : What’s the June 1st memorial service?
B : June 1st is the day when Sot’aesan passed away, so every year we hold a memorial service to commemorate Sot’aesan and our ancestors. There’s also a memorial service on December 1st.
A : Are there any other days of commemoration?
B : There are, of course, the Four Festival Ceremonies. New Year’s Day, the day of Sot’aesan’s enlightenment and founding of Won Buddhism, the day of Dharma authentication, and Sakyamuni Buddha’s birthday. That’s why we say ‘Four Festival Ceremonies and Two Memorial Services’.

B : 응, 교당에 육일대재 지내러 간단다.
A : 육일대재가 뭔데요?
B : 대종사님 열반일인 6월 1일을 맞아서 대종사님과 원불교의 모든 조상님들을 추모하기 위해 합동으로 향례를 올리는 거야. 12월1일에는 명절대재를 지낸단다.
A : 다른 기념일도 있나요?
B : 4가지 경축일이 있지. 새해를 맞이하는 신정절, 대종사님께서 대각하시고 원불교를 여신 대각개교절, 법계의 인증을 받은 법인절, 석가모니 부처님께서 태어나신 석존성탄절이 그거란다. 그래서 4축2재라고 하지.
