미국교도 참여도 이끌어 내야
개인의 포용성, 창조성 존중
We would like to tell you a little bit about ourselves so that our friendship will grow and become deeper as the years go by.
One thing that we Americans hold very dear about ourselves is that our way of life and our culture, even our personal identities, are based on the ideal of democracy.
That means that we all believe we have a responsibility to have an opinion, based on sound thought, on important matters. We also believe that we have a right to have our opinions heard and taken seriously.
We discuss, argue, write, complain, suggest, and constantly influence one another's opinions in many ways. It will be very helpful for you to know this about us, because asking our opinion is one of the best ways to win our friendship and trust.
For example, everyone is looking forward to the Won Buddhism Centennial Celebration, in Korea and here in the U.S. It will be a wonderful opportunity for people from all across America to come together with one great wish for the next 100 years of Won Buddhism to help bring a new age of harmony in the world.
The most important thing for making this Celebration meaningful to us American members is that we should be able to take part in the planning for that wonderful occasion. If the Korean leadership does all the planning without involving any Americans, the American members will politely and gratefully participate. But at the same time, many American members would be somewhat disillusioned by having been left out of such an important opportunity to work together.
American democracy also means being inclusive. We are a nation of many colors, races, and nations. We believe everyone is important to our success, including young people and even teenagers and children.
When the adults are making decisions, the young people often have a great deal to say. And the young people often want to plan their own cultural and educational events, with the help of the adults. This is the American way. The creativity of each and every person is encouraged and cherished. This is a great contribution that American society has been making to the world, and it is one that we are proud of.
To participate in that American way of inclusiveness and listening to everybody is one way that Won Buddhism can become a truly American order. Thank you so much for this opportunity to express our point of view. We love Won Buddhism, and we sincerely wish to practice what the kyomunims are teaching us. Kamsahapnida, and Blessings.
아메리칸 원불교 교도들은 원불교가 미국에 들어 온 것을 환영하며 감사하게 생각합니다. 우리는 우리의 우정이 해마다 깊어지고 확장될 수 있도록 하기 위해서 한국에 계신 분들에게 우리들 자신에 대한 이야기를 조금 말씀 드리겠습니다.
우리 미국인들이 소중하게 여기는 것들 중의 하나는 우리들의 삶과 문화 그리고 나아가 인격의 정체성이라고 할 수 있는 것은 민주주의를 이상으로 한다는 것입니다.
그것이 의미하는 바는 우리 미국인들은 모두가 건전한 생각에 바탕하여 중요한 사안들에 대해 확실한 견해를 가질 책임이 있다는 믿음이 있습니다.
또한 우리는 우리의 의견에 귀 기울여 듣고 신중하게 수용하도록 할 권리가 있다는 믿음을 가지고 있습니다. 우리는 다양한 방식으로 토론하고 논쟁하고 글을 쓰고 불평하고 제기하면서 끊임없이 서로간의 의견들에 영향을 미칩니다.
여러분들이 (한국의 원불교 공동체를 의미함) 우리 미국인들의 이러한 성향을 아는 것은 대단히 유익할 것입니다.
왜냐하면 우리의 의견을 묻는다는 것은 우리의 우정과 신뢰를 얻는 최선의 길이기 때문입니다.
예를 하나 들어 보겠습니다. 한국이나 미국에 있는 사람들이 모두 원불교 백주년 기념행사를 기대하고 있습니다. 다가오는 원불교 백주년행사들이 화동의 세계를 여는 새로운 세기를 만들어 가는 다음의 백년을 위한 큰 열망들을 가지고 미국의 여러 지역에서 사람들이 함께하는 놀라운 기회가 되고자 하기 때문입니다.
우리 아메리칸 교도들에게 의미있는 기념행사가 되기 위해서 가장 중요한 것은 이 거룩한 행사에 우리도 행사 계획을 짜고 하는 일에 참여할 수 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 만약 한국의 지도층이 아메리칸 교도들의 참여없이 모든 계획을 세우고 진행한다면 아메리칸 멤버들은 젊잖케 참가하기는 할 것입니다.
그러나, 많은 아메리칸 멤버들은 함께할 중요한 기회에서 배제된 것에 대해서 환멸을 느낄 수도 있습니다.
아메리칸 민주주의가 의미하는 바는 함께 참여한다는 것입니다. 우리는 여러 피부색들, 여러 인종들과 국적들이 함께 모여 이뤄진 나라입니다.
우리는 젊은 사람들 그리고 10대들과 어린 아이들까지도 모두 빠짐없이 각 개개인들이 우리의 성공에 중요하다고 믿습니다. 어른들만이 결정권을 갖게 될 때 젊은 사람들은 심각하게 문제제기를 합니다.
그리고 젊은 사람들도 어른들의 도움을 받아 자신들의 문화적 교육적 사안들을 계획하고자 합니다. 이것이 아메리칸 방식입니다.
각 개개인이 발휘하는 각각의 창의성은 격려받고 소중하게 취급됩니다. 이것이 미국사회가 세계에 주는 중요한 기여일 것이며, 그리고 이 점이 우리가 자부심을 갖는 것 중의 하나입니다.
포용성과 개개인의 의견을 소중히 듣는 아메리칸 방식에 동참하는 것이 원불교가 진정으로 아메리칸 원불교가 될 수 있는 한 길입니다.
미국인들의 견해를 밝힐 수 있는 기회를 갖게 된 것에 감사합니다. 우리는 원불교를 사랑합니다. 그리고 우리는 충심으로 교무님들이 가르치는 것을 수행하고자 합니다.
