원불교 미국화 기초
교육으로 세계문명발전 기여
미주선학대학원 원불교학과 교수
Ven. Taesan, Won Buddhism's third Head Dharma Master, was a lifelong advocate for the integrative spirit in the field of interfaith studies. Following his vision, the Won Institute incorporates the non-religious, the scientific, and the secular as well as spiritual perspectives in its academic programs, meditation practices, clinical healing, and community services. These are embodied in the Institute's three foundational academic programs: Applied Meditation, Acupuncture, and Won Buddhism.
Dr. Kim pointed out that Won Institute acupuncture graduates include meditation training in their own professional practices and in the treatments they offer to their patients. Applied Meditation Studies graduates have taken meditation into schools, prisons, and corporations to offer the benefits of regular practice to both Buddhists and non-Buddhists. Our ministerial alumni are deeply committed to carrying out their mission of sharing their meditation practice and Master Sotaesan's teachings with many American friends. As more and more Won Institute students, including chaplaincy students, graduate and enter into professional life with the education and values fostered at the Institute, Dr. Kim hopes that this will become a great legacy for Won Buddhism, and a strong basis for a Won Buddhist social renewal movement in America.
The Buddhadharma is becoming an important element in the spiritual lives of many Americans, and every day someone discovers a Won Buddhist temple or the Won Institute or the Won Dharma Center. Their joy is so great when they realize what they have found that they strongly wish to engage in study at the temples or at the Won Institute and to make these beautiful teachings a part of their daily lives. In the imagination of Dr. Bokin Kim, that work is the important future for the Won Institute.
김복인 교무는 미국에서 원불교의 미션을 수행하는데 미주선학대학원의 역할에 대해서 자신의 견해를 나에게 설명해 줬다. 소태산대종사님은 연구 배움 지식 교육에 대해서 지대한 관심을 가졌다는 것이다. 즉 자타의 국한을 벗어나 교육기관을 확장하고 교육을 통하여 세계문명을 발전시킨다는 꿈을 가졌다. 소태산대종사의 뜻을 받들어 정산종사는 교육이 세계진화의 근본이며 인간문명의 토대라고 강조했다. 정산종사는 해방직후인 1946년에 원광대학을 설립하여 원불교 교무를 양성하는 프로그램 등 두 프로그램으로 학교를 시작했다. 오늘날 원광대학교는 한국에서 굴지의 명문대학 중의 하나가 됐다. 원불교의 교육에 대한 열망은 미국에 그 뿌리를 내리고 있다.
대산종법사는 종교간 대화 분야를 중시하면서 통합적 교육의 중요성을 강조하였다. 대산종법사의 비전을 따라 미주선학대학원은 비종교적 과학적 세속학문도 선수행이나 치유 그리고 공동체 정신과 같은 영성적 관점과 함께 아카데미 프로그램 속에서 통합시켰다. 이러한 통합교육 혹은 전인교육의 정신은 미주선학대학원의 선응용학, 침구학, 원불교학의 프로그램으로 구체화됐다.
김 교무는 미주선학대학원 침구학과 석사과정은 고유의 전문훈련에 선수행을 포함시키고 환자들에게도 치료방법으로 제안한다. 선응용학 석사과정은 선수행 프로그램을 학교나 교도소 그리고 기업들이 불교도나 비불교도들에게 정규적인 선수행의 기회를 제공할 수 있도록 한다. 미주선학대학원 출신 교무들이 선수행의 체험과 소태산대종사의 가르침을 더 많은 미국인들에게 전하려고 하는 확고한 서원을 가지고 있다. 채플란 학생들을 포함해 미주선학대학원에서 해를 거듭하면서 더 많은 미래 학생들이 졸업하고 본교에서 배운 교육과 가치관으로 무장하여 전문영역으로 들어 갈 것이며, 이것이 원불교를 위한 큰 업적이 될 것이며 미국사회를 새롭게 변화시키기 위한 원불교의 힘있는 기초가 될 것이라고 김 교무는 전망한다.
불법은 많은 미국인들의 영성적 삶에 중요한 요소가 되고 있으며 매일 매일 누군가는 원불교 교당이나 미주선학대학원 혹은 원다르마센터를 찾게 될 것이다. 그들이 학교나 교당에서 배움에 참여하고자 하는 열정과 자신들의 아름다운 배움을 일상생활의 한 부분으로 삼고자 하는 열망이 강해진다는 것을 스스로 자각하게 될 때 그들의 기쁨은 대단할 것이다.
김 교무의 비전대로 미주선학대학원의 미션은 원불교 미래를 위해 중요한 일이 될 것이다.
