각 교당을 방문 할 때마다 저는 원불교인으로서 우리가 진실로 한 가족임을 다시 생각합니다. 이 관계를 말로 표현할 수는 없지만, 교도로서 특별한 유대 관계가 있다고 느낍니다. 우리가 방문하는 모든 교당에서 우리를 사랑과 따뜻함으로 맞이합니다. 교무님들은 각 방을 준비하고 모든 학생들이 편안하게 잠잘 수 있도록 정성을 들입니다. 식료품점에 가서 학생들의 입맛에 맞는 식재료와 음식을 사서 연회를 준비합니다. 특별한 손님이 한국에서 오고 있는 것을 알리기 위해 교도님들에게 미리 초대장을 보냅니다. 그리고 우리를 만나 진심으로 기뻐하는 교도님들의 무궁한 사랑을 받습니다.
이 관계의 역동성은 원인과 결과에 대한 한 구절을 생각나게 합니다. 〈대종경〉 인과품에 의하면, "우주의 진리는 원래 생멸이 없이 길이 길이 돌고 도는지라, 가는 것이 곧 오는 것이 되고 오는 것이 곧 가는 것이 되며, 주는 사람이 곧 받는 사람이 되고 받는 사람이 곧 주는 사람이 된다."
저는 이 원리가 해외에 있는 우리 교무님들과 교도님들과의 관계에 적용된다고 생각합니다. 우리는 그들로부터 받은 진실된 사랑과 보살핌을 아직도 기억합니다. 그래서 우리가 다음에 한국이나 미국에서 만날 때, 우리는 두 팔 벌려 서로 인사하고 이야기를 함께 나눌 것입니다. 우리가 계속해서 서로를 지지하는 한, 이 사랑과 보살핌은 무엇이든간에 항상 순환할 것이며 무엇이 오든간에 돌아가고 가든 간에 다시 돌아올 것입니다.
Every summer we take our new incoming Youngsan University students to the US to visit Won Buddhist temples, explore various cities, and meet new people. We are always impressed by the Kyomunims in the US, who dedicate their mind and body to spread the Won Buddhist teachings to as many people as possible. Their hard work and sincere practice inspire our students to study and practice harder. They are true role models for our future generation of Won Buddhist clergy.
Whenever we visit each temple I am reminded that as Won Buddhists we are truly one family. I can't completely articulate this relationship in words, but there is a special bond we have as Won Buddhists. Every temple we visit, we are greeted with love and warmth. The Kyomunims take time to prepare each room and ensure all our students sleep comfortably. They go to the grocery store to buy food they think will suit our students' taste buds and then prepare a feast. They send out invitations to their temple members in advance to notify them that special guests are arriving from Korea. We are then showered with love from temple members who are truly happy to meet us.
The dynamics of this relationship remind me of a passage from the chapter on Cause and Effect, "The truth of the universe originally involves continuous circulation over and over again without either arising or ceasing, so that whatever goes, comes again, and whatever comes, goes again; and a giver becomes a receiver, and a receiver, a giver." I think this principle applies to our relationship with the Kyomunims and temple members abroad. The sincere love and care we receive from them remains with us, so that the next time we meet- either in Korea or the US- we will greet each other with open arms and share stories of our time together. As long as we continue to support each other, this love and care will circulate over and over again, so that whatever goes, comes again, and whatever comes, goes again.
