[원불교신문=송상진 교무] 올해 5월에 두 번째 원불교 국제 영산선원 스테이가 진행된다. 10명의 미국인이 훈련과 공부를 하면서 원불교에 대해 더 많은 것을 배우기 위해 영산선학대학교에 왔다. 나는 그들에게 이런 질문을 하곤 한다. "왜 한 달 동안 한국의 시골에 와서 매일 새벽5시에 일어나려고 하는가?" 그들 대부분은 이렇게 대답한다. "자신은 없다. 하지만 원불교가 시작된 이곳에 와봐야 할 것 같았다." 그들의 눈이 반짝이기 시작하고 목소리에 흥분이 감돈다.

어린 아이들처럼 흥분해있지만 앞에 무슨 일이 있을지 어느 정도 예감하면서 기꺼이 해보겠다는 의지를 나타낸다. 한국어가 서툴기는 해도 동료 학생들과 대화를 하고, 맛있는 식사를 마친 뒤에는 식당 어머니들에게 감사의 말을 한다. 또 법당 안에 들어올 때면 일원상 앞에 경건히 절하고, 아침 명상 시간 동안 잠들지 않으려고 한다. 

몇 년 전 부모와 두 자녀로 이루어진 미국인 가족이 영산을 찾아온 일이 기억난다. 소태산 대종사의 생가를 방문한 그들은 어느 방에 앉아 명상을 시작했다. 잠시 후 어머니가 나한테 와서 이렇게 말했다. "내가 소태산 대종사의 생가에 앉아있다는 게 믿어지지 않는다. 너무 행복하다." 나도 이따금 찾아가는 그 집은, 이들에게는 소태산 대종사의 삶을 처음으로 가깝게 접촉해 본 집이었던 것이다. 영산 스테이 참가자들 대부분도 원불교 설립자의 발걸음을 따라 걸어보는 것은 처음일 것이다. 

우리 중 많은 사람들의 꿈은 원불교가 세상 바깥으로 널리 알려지게 하는 것이다. 하지만 나는 그 반대의 물결이 동시에 일어나고 있다는 것을 느낀다. 전 세계 사람들이 원불교의 근원인 한국으로 돌아오고 있는 것이다. 그들의 마음은 원불교가 시작되고 성장했으며 번영한 곳에 머물기를 간절히 원한다. 우리의 바람은 그들이 한 달간의 시간 동안 심오한 영적 맹세를 마음 속에 새겨넣고, 자신이 배운 것을 다른 사람에게 나눠줌으로써 소태산 대종사의 사랑이라는 이 영산의 불빛이 영원히 사그라들지 않게 하는 것이다.

This May marks the 2nd International Won Buddhist Youngsan Stay. Ten Americans will come to Youngsan University of Seon Studies to train and study together with our students with the aim to learn more about Won Buddhism. When I ask them, "Why do you want to spend a month in rural Korea and wake-up every day at 5am?" Most of them answer, "I'm not totally sure, but I just felt I needed to come here, to where Won Buddhism began." Their eyes start to glitter and there's an excitement in their voice.

They're like little kids excited yet a bit apprehensive of what lies ahead, but still willing to take a chance. They engage in conversations with the students despite their limited Korean, thank the cooks after eating a delicious meal, sincerely bow before the Ilwonsang upon entering the dharma hall, and do their best to stay awake during morning meditation. 

Youngsan a few years ago and visiting Master Sotaesan's house. The parents and their two children sat in one of the rooms and started meditating. Afterwards the mother came over and said, "I can't believe I just sat in Master Sotaesan's house. I'm so happy." It was a thatched roof house I visited often, but for this family it was their first time to come into close contact with Master Sotaesan's life. For many of the participants of this Youngsan Stay, it will also be their first time walking in the footsteps of the Founding Master.

For many of us, the vision is for Won Buddhism to spread outwards to the whole world. But I feel a simultaneous counter current is emerging, where people all over the world are returning to the source of Won Buddhism- Korea. Their hearts are yearning to stay in the place where it Won Buddhism began, grew, and flourished.  
Our hope is that this one-month engraves a deep spiritual vow in their heart, and that they take the light of Youngsan- the love of Master Sotaesan- with them and share what they learned with others so that this light never goes out.
