[원불교신문=박도연 교무] 오른손 손가락이 불편해서 왼손으로 청소기를 돌리는데, 생각처럼 잘 안 되는 것을 보고 나는 내심 당황했다. 왼손을 사용할 때면 오른손만큼 힘과 방향을 조절하기 쉽지가 않다. 그동안 오른손만 사용해온 당연한 결과다. 

그날 이후 일상생활 속에서 간단한 것 정도는 양손을 자유롭게 쓰는 것이 좋을 것 같아 왼손을 쓰기 시작했다. 청소기를 사용할 때, 가벼운 물건을 옮길 때, 양치질할 때 등 유념해서 왼손을 쓴다. 그러다가도 유념하지 않거나, 마음이 바쁠 때면 나는 전날의 습관대로 오른손을 사용한다. 

오른손으로 하면 뭐든지 빠르고 정확하게 마무리할 수 있기 때문이다. 이를 보면서 내가 얼마나 익숙함과 편리함을 쫓아 살아가고 있는지를 보게 됐다. 우리는 익숙하고 편리한 것들을 좋아한다. 만나오던 사람들을 만나고, 해오던 대로 일을 한다. 하지만 그 편리함이 때로는 우리 자신을 또는 자연을 해치기도 한다. 

우리가 편리하다고 사용하는 많은 일회용 물품들이 환경 오염을 가져오고, 수많은 생명들이 그로 인해 고통받고, 결국에는 인간들도 그 영향을 피할 수 없다. 또 살다 보면 그 익숙하고 편리한 것을 놓고, 불편하고 불확실한 것을 마주해야 하는 순간이 오기도 한다.

그 불편함을 원망하는 사람이 있고, 불편함을 통해서 성장하는 사람이 있다. 어떤 사람이 될 것인가는 각자의 선택이다. 나는 성장하는 사람이 되고자 오늘도 불편하게 왼손으로 양치를 한다. 

Vacuuming with my left hand due to the injury on my right finger, I felt embarrassed that it didn’t go as well as I thought. Whatever I do with my left hand, it wasn't easy to control the power and direction as much as my right hand. It is a natural consequence that only my right hand has been used for a long time.

Since that day, I have started using my left hand, thinking that it would be better to use both hands in my daily life. 

So, I use my left hand for cleaning, moving light objects, brushing my teeth, etc. But when I am not mindful, or my mind is busy, I use my right hand as I have done habitually in the past. 

This is because I can finish anything quickly and accurately using my right hand. Looking at this, I realized that how much I was seeking familiarity and convenience. 

We like things that are familiar and convenient. We meet people we have been meeting, and we work the way we have been doing. But such convenience sometimes could harm ourselves or nature. 

Many disposable items that we use for the sake of convenience cause environmental problems, and many lives suffer from it, and in the end, humans cannot escape the effects. There are also moments in life when we have to face uncomfortable and uncertainties and let go of the familiar and convenient. This is how we learn and grow at times. 

Some people become resentful of the inconvenience, and other people grow through it. It’s each person’s choice to be. Hoping to be the one growing through the inconvenience, I brush my teeth using my left hand, which is very uncomfortable.
