[원불교신문=원진선 교수] 차를 타고 정관평 방언공사 길을 내려오면서, 나는 내게 또 다른 보금자리가 된 영산선학대학교를 온전히 바라보며 좌회전 신호를 기다렸다. 인천에서 오는 내내 그동안 한국이 그리웠던 마음과 영산 생활에 대한 기대감에 잠을 설쳤다. 나는 영산선학대 예비교무들의 캠퍼스 일상에 함께 참여한다는 것에 감사했다. 

영산은 성스러운 변화의 과정이 일어나는 원불교 성지다. 그래서 영산에서 오랜 시간을 보낼 수 있음이 축복처럼 여겨진다. 이번 성지 방문은 예전에 참여했던 영산국제스테이와는 달리, 예비교무들의 영어 학습을 돕기 위해서였다. 나는 이번 시간을 통해 그들의 영어실력 향상을 돕게 됐다. 이는 원불교 전반과 특히 영산선학대 교육프로그램 성장에 중요한 과정이 될 것이라 생각한다. 이는 서양을 비롯한 영어권 국가에서 원불교를 가르치고 교화하는 데 큰 영향을 줄 것이다.
 

예비교무들은 각자 다른 수준의 영어 실력을 가지고 있었다. 하지만 모두 실력을 향상하고자 하는 것에는 공통된 열정을 보였고, 나는 그들을 돕고 싶었다. 서로 도움을 주고 받으며 실력을 쌓는 모습은 참 아름다웠다. 예비교무들이 추가 수업에 능동적으로 참여하며 수업 안팎에서 영어로 말하는 것이 제법 편안해질만큼 실력이 향상되어가는 것이나, 원어민인 나의 말을 더 명확하게 이해할 때는 더욱 보람을 느꼈다. 

물론 내가 구사하는 원어민식 영어와 한국식 영어의 차이에서 미국식 억양에 다소 어려움을 느끼기도 했다. 하지만 우리는 계속 소통하고자 노력하며 서로 ‘배우고 가르치는’ 방법을 찾을 수 있었다. 의사소통이 정말 어려울 때는 예비교무들 중 영어에 능통한 사람의 활약이 큰 도움이 됐다. 재미있는 일도 있었다. 예컨대 예비교무들이 나를 만나 “헬로”라고 인사하면 나는 “안녕”이라고 대답했던 일이다.

세계에서 가장 많이 사용되는 언어인 영어를 영산선학대에서 새롭게 개설된 겨울학기 수업으로 진행하는 것은 다행스럽고도 당연한 일이다. 

예비교무들이 교무가 되는 데 있어 중요한 훈련 중에 영어능력 개발이 지속적이고 일관된 학교의 도움아래 진행될 수 있기를 진심으로 기도한다.

이를 통해 예비교무들이 서양국가의 문화를 배우고 익히는 것은 물론, 소태산 대종사의 개교의 동기를 전할 때 서양 문화적 시각과 환경적인 측면에 있어 꼭 필요한 것을 배울 수 있으리라 믿는다. 

세상에는 마음이 병든 사람이 너무 많다. 나는 원불교가 마음공부로 이런 세상을 치유하는 열쇠(해결책)와 같다고 믿는다. 원불교는 세상을 바꾸는 것에 도움이 될 수 있다. 
영어를 훈련의 일부에 포함하면 더 많은 교무님들이 세상에 나가 많은 중생을 낙원으로 인도하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.

“Won Buddhism I believe provides the key to mind study to help bring healing.”

As we drove down the road passing the embankment project, I waited for the left turn to fully view what has become another home for me, the Youngsan University of Seon Studies. I’ve missed Korea and the anticipation of being on the Youngsan campus kept me awake the entire ride from Incheon. I have always held such gratitude for being allowed to participate in the daily activities on the campus with the Youngsan students. For Youngsan is a sacred place in which a sacred process occurs. So, to spend extended time on the campus is a blessing. This time though was different from all other times which were connected to the Youngsan International Stay. This time I was invited to help students with their conversational English. I see helping students with their English language skills as an important step in the growth of Won Buddhism in general and specifically in Youngsan’s training program. Such will have great implications for the teaching and propagation of Won Buddhism in the West and other English-speaking countries.

Youngsan students, while at different levels in their command of English, all seemed eager to improve their English language skills and I was eager to assist them. It was beautiful to watch them help each other and overtime to feel more and more comfortable speaking in English both in and outside of class, developing greater reading skills and also understanding more clearly someone who is a “native” speaker of the language. Even as they were sometimes challenged by my English and Korean accents and I by their English accents, we found a way to communicate and learn and teach one another. And for those really difficult moments in communicating there was a bilingual Youngsan student who lent assistance. There was also humor. For instance, as students would greet me with a cheerful “hello” I was simultaneously greeting them with an excited “annyeong.”

It makes perfect sense that English as reportedly the most spoken language in the world would be offered as part of the Youngsan Winter Semester and it is my sincere prayer that the Youngsan students receive constant and consistent assistance with the development of their English skills including important features and aspects related to Western cultures and nations. Doing so I believe would serve as a much-needed vehicle for kyomunims who will be able to forward the founding motive set by Master Sotaesan in the context of the West. There is so much that ills the world and Won Buddhism I believe provides the key to mind study to help bring healing. Won Buddhism could help change the world and with the inclusion of English as part of the training more kyomunims will be able to go out into the world and help lead all sentient beings to paradise!
