원기108년 대각개교절을 맞이하여 대종사님의 대각과 원불교의 개교와 모든 재가출가 교도님들의 공동생일을 마음 깊이 축하합니다.
대종사께서 대각하시고 이 회상의 문을 열어주신 지 108년, 어느덧 교단 3대 말을 맞이하게 되니 감회가 새롭습니다.
전무출신 서원을 세우고 교단에 들어왔던 원기 52년, 여름 첫 방학을 맞아 대산종법사님께 인사드리러 갔던 원불교학과 학생들에게 원기 100년을 말씀하시며 대종사님께 어떻게 보은할지 지금부터 연마하고 준비하라는 그 말씀을 받들었던 기억이 새롭습니다.

우리 원불교는 100여 년의 교단 창립 역사를 지나오는 동안 일제 식민통치의 억압과 한국전쟁 등 여러 고통과 혼란의 격변기를 겪었으나, 이제는 오대양 육대주에 일원대도의 깃발을 꽂고 법음을 전하는 기적 같은 교단사를 이뤄 교단 4대의 희망 속에 정성을 다하고 있습니다.
그 모든 것이 대종사님에 대한 신성과 인류 구원의 서원으로 혈성을 다한 선진님들의 공덕으로 생각하며 감사드리고, 사오백 년 결복을 향해서 우리 후진들도 보은 도리를 다할 것을 다짐하며 다음의 세 가지 말씀을 드리고자 합니다.

첫째, 재가·출가의 수많은 법연이 모여드는 회상을 만듭시다.
대종사님의 일원대도를 세계에 두루 전해 하나의 세계를 만들고자 하면 그 일을 할 수많은 일꾼을 만나야 합니다. 그러기로 하면 대산종사께서 말씀하신 ‘전심환영(全心歡迎) 후송결연(厚送結緣)’의 심법으로 법연을 넓혀가야 하겠습니다. 이 심법이라야 수많은 법연이 이 회상에 찾아들어 대종사의 법을 받들어 나갈 것입니다.
더불어 전 교도가 ‘9인 연원’의 교도의무 실행에 정성을 다해야겠습니다. 이렇게 한다면 중성공회(衆聖共會)하는 교운을 따라 수많은 법연이 이 회상에 모여들어 대종사님의 법을 받들게 될 것입니다.

둘째, 교당 내왕시 주의 사항 6조를 교화의 축으로 삼읍시다.
대종사께서는 정신개벽의 방법으로 사실적 도덕의 훈련을 말씀하시고, 훈련의 구체적 방법으로 교당 내왕시 주의 사항 6조를 말씀하셨습니다. 
교당 내왕시 주의 사항 6조는 ‘1. 상시 응용 주의 사항으로 공부하는 중 어느 때든지 교당에 오고 보면 그 지낸 일을 일일이 문답하는 데 주의할 것이요 2. 어떠한 사항에 감각된 일이 있고 보면 그 감각된 바를 보고하여 지도인의 감정 얻기를 주의할 것이요 3. 어떠한 사항에 특별히 의심나는 일이 있고 보면 그 의심된 바를 제출하여 지도인에게 해오 얻기를 주의할 것이요 4. 매년 선기에는 선비를 미리 준비하여 가지고 선원에 입선하여 전문 공부하기를 주의할 것이요 5. 매 예회 날에는 모든 일을 미리 처결하여 놓고 그 날은 교당에 와서 공부에만 전심하기를 주의할 것이요 6. 교당에 다녀갈 때에는 어떠한 감각이 되었는지 어떠한 의심이 밝아졌는지 소득 유무를 반조하여 본 후에 반드시 실생활에 활용하기를 주의할 것이니라’입니다. 
모든 교도가 교당 내왕시 주의 사항 6조로 공부한다면 정신개벽의 대불사가 크고 빠르게 이뤄질 것입니다.

셋째, 재가봉공·출가봉공·국가봉공·세계봉공의 사대봉공을 실천하여 인류의 무지·질병·빈곤을 퇴치하고, 모두가 평화 안락한 전반세계를 이루는 데 정성을 다합시다. 
대종사께서 일원 회상을 열어주신 것은 전 인류의 정신을 개벽하여 도학과 과학이 병진되고, 영과 육이 쌍전되며 공부와 사업이 병진되는 대문명세계를 이루고자 함입니다.  
이 일을 대산종사께서는 ‘천지대공사(天地大公事)’라고 명명했습니다. 
천지대공사에 참여한 우리 모두는 주세불 대종사님의 한량없는 은혜를 입었으니, 그 은혜에 감사하며 정성으로 대보은합시다.
모두가 천지대공사의 큰 일꾼들이 되시기를 심축합니다.

Celebratory Address
for the Great Enlightenment and Founding Day of Won-Buddhism

As we welcome the 108th anniversary of the foundation of Won-Buddhism, we commemorate the Great Enlightenment of the founding master Sotaesan and celebrate the spiritual birthday of all lay and ordained members.

I am filled with profound emotions as we celebrate the 108th anniversary of the founding of Won-Buddhism, marking the completion of the third generational term since our Founding Master Sotaesan attained Great Enlightenment.

I still cherish the memory of Master Daesan’s words to me when I made my first visit to him in the summer of 1967 (WE 52) along with my Dharma brothers and sisters who had also made a solemn vow to become Won-Buddhist ordained devotees. While discussing the upcoming centennial celebration of Won-Buddhism, Master Daesan advised us to prepare ourselves to repay our gratitude to our revered Founding Master Sotaesan through our sincere practice.

Despite facing numerous challenges and periods of upheaval, including Japanese colonial rule and the Korean War, Won-Buddhism has achieved miraculous things. The teachings of Ilwon have spread across the world, reaching every continent and across five great oceans. With a deep sense of hope, we are now preparing ourselves for the fourth generational term of Won-Buddhist history, striving to do our very best.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the great Master Sotaesan, his sincere disciples, and the senior and junior members of Won-Buddhism who have wholeheartedly dedicated themselves to teaching and sharing the Dharma through their earnest vow to save all sentient beings. The remarkable achievements we celebrate today would not have been possible without these devotees’ selfless contributions. As junior members of Won-Buddhism, we renew our commitment to doing our utmost to repay our debt of gratitude to these founders and predecessors as we strive towards five hundred years of accomplishments. With this in mind, I would like to offer the following remarks as we celebrate this momentous occasion.

Firstly, let us establish a congregation where countless members, including both lay and ordained devotees, gather to practice the Dharma.

To spread the Great Way of Ilwon throughout the world and create a world unified by Ilwon, we must connect with numerous individuals who will willingly join in our efforts to do so. To achieve this goal, we must first expand our Dharma affinities by adopting the mindset of “wholeheartedly welcoming others and generously sending them out,” as Master Daesan said. Only through this mindset can we invite countless individuals to join our order and follow the teachings of our Founding Dharma Master Sotaesan.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of all members to make an effort to recruit nine individuals each to become followers of Won-Buddhism. By doing so, we can bring together many Dharma friends and families who will sincerely follow the teachings of Master Sotaesan, in accordance with the good providence of our order, which is blessed to have the guidance of numerous sages.

Secondly, let us consider “Items of Heedfulness Regarding Temple Visits” as the guiding principle of our spiritual growth.

Master Sotaesan emphasized the importance of “Training in Morality Based on Facts” as a means of awakening the mind. He specifically referred to the following “Items of Heedfulness Regarding Temple Visits” as a practical method for training:

1. Whenever you come to temple while practicing the items of heedfulness in daily applications, be heedful to engage in questions and answers about each and every aspect of those activities.

2. If you have awakened to some matter, be heedful to report that awakening to a spiritual mentor and to obtain his or her appraisal.

3. If you encounter a matter that raises a special doubt, be heedful to submit it to a spiritual mentor and gain the awakening of understanding.

4. Be heedful to set aside in advance each year the training fees for Sŏn-retreat (meditation-retreat), so that you may pursue specialized practice in a Sŏn center.

5. On the days of the regular dharma meeting, be heedful to come to temple and dedicate yourself exclusively to practice that day, after settling in advance any outstanding matters.

6. Once you have returned from temple, and after reflecting on whether or not you had some sort of awakening or had any specific doubt clarified, be heedful actively to utilize without fail those lessons in real life.

If all members diligently practice the “Items of Heedfulness Regarding Temple Visits,” the Great Task of the Buddha will be accomplished with greater speed and success.

Thirdly, let us make a wholehearted effort to eradicate ignorance, illness, and poverty from humanity and to create a world of peace and comfort for all people. We can achieve this noble goal by practicing the principle of “Serving the Public in the Four Great Realms,” which comprise the family, the monastery, the state, and the world.

The Founding Master established the congregation of Ilwon with the goal of awakening the minds of all human beings and building a great civilization where we can advance in both the study of the Way and the study of science, achieve completeness in body and spirit, and make progress in both spiritual practice and material business simultaneously.

Venerable Daesan referred to this project as “The Greatest Public Affair of Heaven and Earth.”

As participants in this Greatest Public Affair, we owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the Founding Master, a New Buddha of the World. Let us express our deep appreciation for his teachings and repay our debt to him with utmost sincerity.

I offer my heartfelt blessings to each of you and hope that you may become pillars of the Greatest Public Affair of Heaven and Earth.
