때때로 사람들이 “왜 원불교이어야 하지?” 하는 질문을 합니다. 이런 질문을 받을 때 저는 과연 소태산 대종사님께서 107년 전 대각을 하셨을 때 지구 반대편에서 태어난 한 소녀가 그의 가르침을 찾은 것을 아셨을지 궁금해집니다. 소태산 대종사님의 가르침은 제 삶의 좌표입니다. 원불교는 제 안의 자비심을 일깨워주었습니다. 많은 사람 중 한 사람인 저는 소태산 대종사님으로 인해 모든 생명이 하나로 이어져 있음을 믿고, 연기법을 받아들이고, 내가 하는 모든 생각과 행동이 결과로 이어진다는 것을 이해하게 됐습니다. 온 마음을 다해 오늘 원불교 열린 날을 축하합니다. 저도 소태산 대종사님과 같이 온 세상을 마음에 품은 사람이 되기를 염원합니다.

Sometimes people ask, “Why Won Buddhism?” Often in those moments I wonder if Master Sot’aesan knew that almost 100yrs after his enlightenment, a girl born on the other side of the world would someday find his teaching. It was the moment of his awakening that provided me with direction. Today, I’m just one woman in a sea of many people. Yet, I now have faith in the non-separateness of all beings, sincerely embrace the truth of dependent origination, and understand that my every thought and action have a result. With great humility, I am grateful on this Day of Enlightenment to celebrate the birth of the truth in this world. When people ask, “Why Won Buddhism?” I tell them that Won Buddhism gave me a compassionate heart and an unending determination to be like it’s Founding Master, who loved the world so deeply that he shined the truth in all ten directions without end.

107번째 원불교의 생일을 축하합니다! 처음 원불교를 만나고 저를 다시 교당으로 돌아오게 한 것은 기도였습니다. 기도는 경종 소리처럼 제 안에 깊이 공명 되었습니다. 『정전』 개교의 동기를 읽으면서 107년 전에도 오늘날과 관련이 있는 내용이 있다는 것에 놀라웠습니다. 앞으로도 세상의 더 많은 사람이 원불교를 발견하고 일원의 신앙을 키워가기를 기원합니다.

Happy the 107th spiritual birthday of Won Buddhism! When I attended a Won Buddhist Temple for the first time, what drew me in and kept me coming back was the Prayer. The prayer resonated deeply within me, like the sound of a gong. When I began to read the Scriptures, I was amazed by the Founding Motive of the Teaching, which is just as relevant today as it was 107 years ago. My hope for the next century is that more people around the world discover Won Buddhism and develop their faith in Il Won.

진정한 스승은 그분이 안 계실 때 가장 현존합니다. 스승님이 계시지 않을 때 비로소 그분의 가르침이 뿌리를 내리고 자라 꽃을 피웁니다. 제자들은 자신들의 옛 사고방식을 버리고 마음을 열어 스승님들의 가르침을 받아들여, 스승님들께서 생각하신 대로 생각하고, 그분들이 아신 것처럼 알게 됩니다. 소태산 대종사님의 대각과 가르치심을 통해 이 세상을 위한 회상이 펼쳐졌습니다. 저와 수많은 이들이 일원의 광명을 믿게 된 것에 대해 감사드립니다.

”The true teacher is most present in his absence. It is then that all he has taught takes root, grows, and blossoms. The student leaves behind their old way of thinking, and their minds open to receive all that their teacher gave them, think as their teacher thought, and know as their teacher knows. The stage is set for a world as it is meant to be through the enlightenment and teachings of Founding Master Sotaesan, and I and so many others are grateful to be believers in believing in the light of the Il-Won-Sang."

원불교를 알게 된 지 2년이 조금 넘었습니다. 원불교를 제 삶에서 알게 된 것이 정말 감사합니다. 삼학수행을 하게 되면서 제 삶에 실로 큰 변화가 일어났습니다. 원불교 공부를 통해서 저 자신과 다른 사람, 그리고 이 세상에 대한 이해가 깊어졌으며, 더 큰 평화와 행복, 자비심을 경험하고 있습니다.
